I recently decided to upgrade my second computer. To do that I needed to sell my old rig to a friend of mine.

But due to the wish I needed to bring my computers to a lan I got a new case for my new machine I as a stop gap measured put the second machines components into the new case. After the lan was over I transfered over all my components to there new owner invidually, properly wrapped and packaged.

These included a 2600 Athlon Xp an Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe motherboard,768mb of twin mos pc 2700 ram a 550watt q-tec psu an 80G Maxtor hard drive, dual neon light kit a geforce 2 gts 32mb graphics card and finally a thermaltake xaser III v1000A case. These where in perfect working order last time I used them. They where to be joined by a dvd-rom drive ,floppy drive, several pci expansion cards (modem, network cards etc) and 2 small hard drives.

So after problem with the wiring of the case we got the machine up and running or so we thought. On the post screen all drives where detected as well as the ram and cpu. So we tried to install windows xp. We got as far as windows is now setting up message and then it frooze. So after several more attempts the same message appeared. Okay we tried Windows 2000 which refused to even boot up. No joy with windows 98. Must be a hardware problem right?. Okay we started the process of eliminate the problems. First we tried removing one stick of ram then we tried the other . We tried the ram in the various ram slots no joy. Then different ram. Next we tried different hard drives no go. Then the pci expansion cards and finally changing the graphics card but no joy the problem countined. There was several people around that know there stuff about computers and we tried several various settings in the bios no go. The only glimmer of hope was that we got Linux Knoppix to boot from a cd and got into the GUI it seemed to work fine. After a while we came to the conclusion it had to be the motherboard right...perhaps the memory controller had called it a day. I agreed to not take payment of the computer till it was up and running a wise move by my friend so I had no choice but to fork out for the new motherboard.

So yesterday my Abit NF7-S Rev. 2.0. Joy of joy I was at last going get this computer sorted (this had been going on for over 2 weeks). So we slapped in the motherboard only to realize the clip was broken on the heatskin on the Asus board. So after spending a age removing the heatskin from the old defective board we got the Athlon XP 2600 in the new motherboard. Trying to get the heatskin was just as hard and we even managed to chip the clip catch on the motherboard but eventually we prevailed and got into the post screen again everything detected fine. Tried to load up windows xp only to be stumped by the same error message. Great the f-ing motherboard was never at fault  . So it had to be the cpu. So we removed an Athlon XP 2200 from another machine. At the same time it was replaced by the the Athlon XP 2600 that we supected was defective. We where proved right as it failed to boot into windows after windows gave us the option of starting windows in safe mood or normally. But of more concern the machine I was trying to sell was now working. We got into the hard drive format screen formatted successfully before and started windows install which frooze on detecting device drivers oh crap!!!!. So we tried again hoping it was a one off. At last luck was on my side it formated fine and we got windows xp installed. Windows itself seemed to work fine. So all seemed grand. I would just sell off the other Asus motherboard and then use that money to get a replacement cpu for the old machine we borrowed the athlon 2200 from. Then just on my way out the door as I was thinking this is going work out okay. The new owner decided to move the computer only to be treated to a large pop and spark from the cpu. If that was not bad enough the burning smell really summed it up. Okay we would just use the psu from the old computer that we borrowed the 2200 xp from. I would then have to fork out more money for a new psu. Oh well I thought **** happens twice. Then I got the phone call. They tried the other psu but nothing happened. What happened the stupid Q-Tec psu had not only commited hari kari it also took the frigging new abit motherboard with it.......yippe  . So tomorrow will be spent installing the old asus board again to see what other components where damaged if any. Also leaves me wondering will I be able to get my abit board replaced if not I'm screwed being flat broke at the moment.

Well feel free to laugh your ass off. Why do I always get the ****test luck with these things. I knew q-tec psu are hazzards to your computers but I mean if only held out a few more days. The people I sold too are starting to call me the moate cowboy due to my dogy components. Don't get we started on corrupts bios with my own machines, a crappy cpu revision on my clawhammer, graphics card that won't over clock even when you swap them with better ones that have artic coolerss on them. Graphics driver corruptions anyone....these are particular nice as they prevent my winchester from being overclocked. Dead Saitek joystick power cables? Broking logitech joysticks. What about a keyboard that works for one day only on any machine before it stops working. Dead mice at least 4 in the last 7 months. Dead ISDN modem. Crap internet connection anyways. The fact that broadband infustructure was laid down in my town months ago and still has not been switched on.

Its just not fair.....I'll stop whinging now just needed to get it off my chest. That Q-Tec power supply will be saying hello to mr baseball bat tomorrow that will cheer me up!

You know what the kicker is.......when I was posting this message my computer frooze when I get to the end of the second paragraph and I had to retype the first two paragraphs again.

Thats a good idea about the q-tec and some photo's before and after :).

    lol funny!

but it's not only to you that it happens to.

I have the same and even worse luck with computers,

for examply 2month ago I wipe my hard drive, with all the documents and everything! clean.

today I wiped my data hard drive clean! because partition magic mulfunctioned,

before that I burned my hard drive cause I got the wiring wrong and the list goes on and on.

Maybe we should have a sticky thread with all the worst cpu experiences we have had. So who is the most unlucky!

I've only had two bad instances, both involving pets and piss. Our cat pissed through the top of my old monitor. Luckily it was covered under accidental damage and was replaced by poxy pc world for free. The same pc about 2 years later was pissed into by my dog when i had the side of the case open on the kitchen floor to put some ram in. The warranty was gone at this stage. Gotta love my destructive pissing animals.
