just a quick thread before i pick up a new hdd

need more space and i want to back up all my stuff with out having to use dvd's so i'm going to buy another internal drive install my windows xp on it then transfer my files onto it from the first hdd then format the first hdd and send the files back so i have a backup.

currently have a 160gb s-ata seagate and i'm in the market for a 200gb drive. thinking of going for ide as i only have one other s-ata port and if i got another s-ata drive it would eliminate RAID as a future option what people thinka bout this?

also all the drives are equivalent priced more or less and equivalently specced so what do people say

    maxtor: http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=302610&cks=PRL
    seagate: http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=123995&cks=PRL
    WD: http://www.komplett.ie/k/ki.asp?sku=112810&cks=PRL

i'm not that pushed on noise as the computer is noisy enough anway so won't make much difference. also i wouldn't mind some better performance than my current seagate and i believe maxtor and WD would offer that. what do people think?

    cheers

Stay away from maxtor. Their reliability and performance isn't great with maybe the exception of the new 16mb versions. Seagate are famed for their quietness but the performance isn't as good as the others. Go western digital or hitachi for performance. The Hitachi drives are actually better but it's close.

cheers bloodbath, afaik there is no hitachi at the 200Gb size and the 250 is above my price point so i guess that makes it the WD
