I had an ati aiw card and i really liked mmc tbh especially the tv software. ive sold it on now and i bought a compro tv gold card (supposed to be pretty good)

Basically im wondering whats the pvr software for me, the compro software sucks, you cant move channels about once u tune them in!!! so im stuck with BBC 1 as say the last channel, i have my own order i like and it wont let me change them,

i tried the trial of beyond tv and that seems to be the same? and sage tv seems to crash all the time for me?

Dscaler works fine but theres no pvr really and i dont think i can use my remote with it,

is there any proggy that gives basic scheduling funtionality and looks semi decent and will let me assign my channel numbers?

MythTV is the way to go. Also has audio jukebox, can download a tv schedule, loads of plug ins - weather, news etc etc - also works as a DVD player too. It's the cahones of the dog.

does it work as tv software itself or is it a frontend?

    is that not linux?

Try http://www.byopvr.com , I found them exceptionally helpful, and Rampy from their forums even posts here on occassion (though I'd sooner post on their forums than PM him here... who know's how often he checks his messages?)

Both. MythTV really is the dogs though. Kenmc is absolutely right. It even has mame functionality built in. *drool*

It is Linux allright. There's a /massive/ amount of documentation out there though, including this excellent step by step guide for installing with fedora core (Red Hat). IOL (Esat) have a download mirror for Fedora Core 3, so you can download it overnight.

I'll be building my own PVR next weekend hopefully, and I intend doing it with Fedora Core 3 and MythTV.

    Bling! :D

Try KnoppMyth. It will set up linux + MythTV for you from scratch and requires minimal input for linux config.

I had some issues with it before due to some pokey hardware in my system (not my PVR card, and not KnoppMyth's fault) but the video operation/linux install using it was as easy as I've ever experienced.

A lad gave that to me on cd the other day. I assumed that it was the same as knoppix (i.e. run without hard drive). I might give it a bash. A minimalist install is all I require.

Yep, it's pretty handy, if nothing else it'll let you get a 'feel' for it before you do a full install.

Worth noting too that, with MythTV, you can run the PVR part on a PC, but you could pick up an xbox, mod it, install linux + mythfront end, and you've got a cheap way to watch the PVR recorded material elsewhere in the house via network (and you may find an xbox runs quieter than the PC you're gonna use!)

Perhaps a bit overkill for you starting off anyway :)
