    hey all!

Right, my last self build, about 4/5 years ago, has finally given up the ghost and is giving a bit of trouble so I think its time for a new build.

Im just wondering what you guys would suggest, I was thinking may be a system that can play HL2 and that i can also use for writing programs on.

say: 64 bit AMD, 1 gig ram, motherboard(not very up on motherboards), graphics card, HD, dvd burner, soundcard.

I have a budget of about €1000 to spend.

    thanks in advance

Which route do you wanna go AMD/Intel AGP/PCI-E

How much room you need, you need about 1Gb of RAM for HL2
If its the intel route and the PCI-E watch out for DDR2 some mobos are others are not.
Graphis at the mo are up in the air.Try get a 9800Pro/XT AGP or a 6600 GT AGP/PCI-E,mmmmmm........... new SATA HDD's wrth alook but been told the OS on them are skittish  Dont have one yet.

    What else you need ?
    good starting point ?

for €1000 you should be able to get:

    P4 3.2 GHz
    P4 mobo
    1GB RAM
    9800pro/6600gt agp
    200GB SATA HDD
    Case
    PSU

    thanks for the replies lads.

i want to go down the AMD route really and i suppose i need about 160 Gig Hd,

For gaming Athlon 64 has edge, video encoding P4 still holding lead.

Are you going to be carrying over any parts to keep costs down (like case/powersupply)?

Wait a little longer until PCI-express prices settle/availability better.
Then: 939 socket Athlon 64 3200+ (or whatever speed becomes best value)
PCI-express MoBo (939 with DDR1 memory to keep costs down 2x512Mb in dual config). If price difference not huge nforce4 SLI board (for possible future upgrade to dual GFX).
PCI-express GFX card (6600GT or X700XT. Possibly 6800 if prices drop).
Don't know much about SATA prices, but most of these MoBo support IDE drives as well as SATA, so if price difference too much could get large IDE.

Soundcard: Audigy 2 pci (check out creative store for refurbished models to keep prices down)

DVD Burner - dual layer Nec writers good value

    Quick list

    6600 Gt - 219
    AMD Athlon64 3400+ - 240
    MSI K8N NEO Platinum nForce3 - 117
    Seagate Barracuda 200GB S-ATA - 124
    Purepower Butterfly 480W PSU - 89
Cooler Master Centurion Case - 65
    TwinMOS PC3200 DDR - 150
    NEC DVD recorder (DUAL LAYER)-71

Total = 1075 (all from Komplett)

Shop around for cheaper and better but that gives ya pointer i hope

hey thanks for the help lads,
emm i wont be carrying anything over except the monitor, which is a piece of crap but will have to do.

regarding the motherboard and RAM what should i be looking for? DDR 2 or just DDR?

    thanks again

Depends what you can afford. DDR2 a bit dearer. Also of course depends on whatever MoBo can take. As far as I can see the current Athlon SLI MoBo take DDR1. In theory DDR2 will give higher performance, but in practice increase mightn't be much.
