Thinking of organizing a trip to Riga (Latvia) early in the new year. Anyone ever been? Tips/Advice? Is it possible to fly direct? What are the prices like when you get there, i.e. food, drink.

    Any help is much appreciated!

    ;)

I was there last summer. It is fantastic, we did fly direct from dublin alright I can't remember the name of the airline but it was either an estonian or latvia airline.

I would recommend staying in the old city area, it is the tourist trap part but safer and friendlier. Hotels, Food, Drink .. everything is cheap, about €1 - €1.50 a beer at the most. Plenty of sights and musems to see .. check out the Occupation Museum - very morbid, but gives a great insight to life under soviet and german occupation.

The city comes alive at night, with clubs open till well into the early hours. Drink tends to be alot more expensive but still not too expensive. There are alot of strip, massage/knocking shops around which taxi drivers nearly insist on taking you to, but aside from that there is a great selection of 'normal' pubs, clubs and eateries.

In clubs be careful of 'atractive' local ladies befriending you, they will accept a drink and insist that they order it because they can speak the lingo and you may get a nasty suprise when you get the bill! Just insist on ordering your own drinks and they leave you along pretty quick.

Take a bus tour of the city (the leave from near the occupational museum), this will give you a chance to see the 'real' riga where the effects of communisim are still evident.

The currency is the LAT and one LAT is about stg£1, money can be changed anywhere

I was there about four months ago - it was -12. I recommend going mid-summer. It was a great experience.

Take care as previous poster said of the se.x industry and offshoots. We tried going to a legit music venue outside town for an electronic event, and the taxi driver was adament we shouldn't go there for there we no women for sale there - we impressed upon him our particular desire for music on this occasion and he seemed most preturbed.

    Good gig after though! :)

The city's very pretty. Ice skating at 4am in the morning in the main square will stick with me forever.

Ryanair fly there out of London, not a particularly painful experience - airport close to city centre. Give lots of time to return to airport via bus though, it's a winding route, and bus not altogether regular.

Found it inexpensive, quality location to go for a few days.
