Time to replace a '06 Accord? with what?

I hope you are well.

I drive a 2006 Honda Accord 2.0 ivtec.

The heat shield on the catalytic convertor came off, as the bolts rusted, over a high ramp. The car drives really well. I brought it for a service and the mechanic said that there is significant rust and corrosion in the rear sub- frame and the exhaust. It is not going to fall off, but the nct may fail it, so he patched it up a bit and said that if nct fails,come back to him & he will tell me how much a repair would cost.

The tax on this car is high at €710 pa

He said it could potentially be more than the value of the car.

So would you repair this Accord or replace it at the next, big repair point?

I am looking for a low tax, economical, reliable car.. around the ford focus size or slightly smaller... could you recommend some models to look at?

I am thinking around 2011- 2016.

If possible, with space to carry a bike with wheel removed...

yes, thats the most economical solution.

At the age range you gave alot of cars are diesels.

I would look at a toyota prius.

Fix it and keep it rolling until it becomes utterly uneconomical to fix. That engine will never die with normal maintenance.

But as others have said you may be best off fixing your Accord. If the rest of the car is sound, engine / gearbox etc. then €1k to fix it up would be a lot cheaper than €7k for another oldish 2nd hand car. That remaining €6k post fix would pay for 8.5 years of car tax for your Accord.

Yes the engine, interior, gearbox etc are all running very well.. it is a shame that the underside is corroding.. my local mechanic said that it is > 20 years old and living beside the sea doesn't help!

Generally no as you'll be buying a 10 year old car with no tax and no NCT and no idea of the VRT cost or other import fees

Toyota hybrids don't go wrong. And the warranty on the battery is huge (15 years) if you get the car serviced by Toyota.

Only thing that can happen is discharge of the standard 12v battery if not driven regularly.
