How long until we see €3 a litre

Availability is going to be an issue over the coming weeks.

The Yasa Hawk is due to arrive in the UK tomorrow, it's the last ship to arrive from the strait of homaz since the start of the blockade.

Even if another tanker left today, it'll be a month before it gets here.

The UK gets a lot of crude from the North Sea, but the UK refineries are set up to make petrol.. not diesel or kero.

The kero/diesel/ jetA1 comes from the Gulf.

    So . How long before €3. ?

I think 2 or 3 months.. at which point there's restrictions placed on purchases.

E3 a litre is going to have a huge effect on the economy.

If the govt stand by and let it reach that level …well I was going to say they are inept and dangerously out of touch but we are at that point now!!!

If the Gardai let the haulage protest go off without any type of blockage/fight back, thats a sign that the government couldnt give a **** about tomorrow. Knowing full well that protests such as these fizzle out over the course of the day. What we need is a type of canadian convoy looking to stay the course over a few weeks

2.15/L on diesel and 1.99 on petrol on my morning commute this morning

Thank **** for electric cars is all I can say

I think we'll see it within 4 weeks. I've heard the 'experts' explain that it takes 2 months to get tankers from the Strait to Europe, so anything that left 2 months ago, is already on its way here, but with the Strait being closed for 5 weeks, expect things to get change drastically from 3 to 4 weeks. At that point I think we'll see European governments issue advisories and guidelines for potential rationing

Most of the oil that passes the Strait of Hormuz goes to the far east, especially China and would take closer to a month to get to these destinations. Any shortages will happen there first and if these countries hold a 30 day supply that's where the 2 month figure would come from

Our government can do very little as they have done so little planning for a situation like this.

No LNG storage, no nuclear, carbon tax increasing annually, tax and duty on fuel excessive

They can do a lot. As the wholesale price goes up, the tax take (in € terms) for the government per litre goes up too. They can reduce the % and still be in the net positive.

I'm not involved in the (IMHO pointless) strikes but if I were, this would be my angle.

Ignore - was thinking about how much of the cost was fixed versus percentage but messing with VAT would be too tricky I'm guessing.

We have one refinery ourselves that gets most of its crude oil from the USA.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whitegate_refinery

Currently the refined products are sold abroad, but that could conceivably change and production altered to high demand, high profit fuels for the domestic market.

But it doesn't matter a damn what the cost of fuel at the forecourt is if the supply runs low and rationing comes about. No amount of government incentive or large scale protest is going to refill an empty tank then.

your all acting like oil is a public service, its a private commodity, we have no say in any of this.
people saying "the governmetn could have done xyz" are the same that would cry if the government went to regulate anything, like taxies.

Tankers from the US that were destined for Europe, have diverter to Asia.

The last tanker from the Gulf heading to the UK arrived this morning, the last tanker for oil from the Gulf arrives in Europe on the 10th April.

May and June will be very interesting.

In a month or two, there won't be any go slow protests, unless the EV brigade do it.

The one garage on the strand road and the two on rock road Blackrock all holding at 2.15/L Diesel.

On my way to work this morning all 3 garages on Rochestown Ave all ready up to 2.25/L at 9am this morning. Gouging!

There's a tanker discharging US crude oil in Whitegate right now. The American crude market is huge and Europe is a much shorter hop than Asia meaning the profitability remains high for the shipping company and the charterers.

I would argue 2.15/L is gouging enough but from a forecourt point of view, make hay while the sun shines as they say

They need taxes to pay for things like the health service, Martins trip to Washington and bike sheds. You can argue they don't spend the money very well but that only means they need even more of it. By reducing taxes you de-facto give a subsidy to the oil companies. Agreed, completely pointless protests going on today, especially since the Dáil is on (yet another) holiday!

Moving to EV would do more than any protest ever will at curbing the price of driving a car but a better protest would be to not move the vehicles at all. Cars, tractors, trucks and private buses all just parked up at home. Watch as the economy grinds to a halt

That didn't come from the Gulf.

    That's North Sea oil.

    But I'll gladly take it

Next door neighbour just got a Honda HRV. You don't see many of them, so I was wondering how 'E' the 'EV' was. As suspected.

    https://www.honda.ie/product?t=models

Honda e:HEV full hybrids are self-charging, drawing power from regenerative braking. There’s no need for a mains electricity supply, saving you time and hassle of installing a charging point.

He must be delighted with himself right now having saved all that time and hassle.

I have sympathy for those who cannot buy new and are dependent on the more limited EV supply in the 2nd hand market. But I have zero sympathy for anyone who bought a new ICE from 2024 onwards.

It did come from the Gulf, the Gulf of Mexico. The ship loaded the crude oil in Texas, we import a huge amount of oil from the USA and only a minority from the Persian Gulf.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,554 ✭✭✭mikeecho

When I say the Gulf, I'm referring to

The Gulf region (Persian Gulf) is the world's primary energy hub, accounting for roughly 20% of global seaborne oil passing through the Strait of Hormuz. It is dominated by major producers like Saudi Arabia, Iraq, and the UAE.

The fixed excise taxes after the most recent cut are as follows:

Petrol = excise duty 41.988 cent + carbon tax 16.43 cent = 58.42 cent per litre fixed tax

Oil has been way too cheap for ever. This at last gives other technologies a chance to shine. Very difficult to compete with oil that is as cheap as water. We need oil at 500 dollars a barrel and that will propel us..yes ireland..to the new Saudi Arabia of the world with wind and solar. Roll it on Trump.

That clown has taco ed again. Reliant on cheap oil again

We need a "How long until we see a sub €2 again" thread.

    To cover all scenarios.

Thats a derogatory term you are using for Pakistanis.

I suspect that with the re-opening of Hormuz and the strong chance that the 2 week ceasefire will continue that the price of petrol and diesel will hold steady for a few weeks before dropping again. It will take time for the full flow to get back to where it was but I hope everybody has learnt 2 lessons

    1. Upgrade the car to an EV and the oil boiler to a heat pump when the chance to upgrade comes along
    2. If there's no chance to upgrade soon then at least refill the kerosene tank when it hits €1 a liter, even if that means in the middle of the summer
