Volkswagen recalls 100,000 electric cars

Volkswagen has announced a large recall of electric cars after a safety issue was found in the batteries.
The issue involves a risk of fire linked to faults in the high-voltage battery systems used in several popular models.

According to authorities, defective battery modules could overheat and in some cases lead to a fire.
While such incidents are considered rare, officials warn the risk is serious due to the difficulty of extinguishing lithium battery fires.

Models affected

The recall impacts nearly 95,000 vehicles worldwide.
This includes around 75,000 cars from Volkswagen’s ID series and approximately 19,500 Cupra Born models.
Affected vehicles were produced between February 2022 and August 2024.
Models involved include the ID.3, ID.4, ID.5, ID.7 and ID.Buzz.

Warning signs

Drivers may notice a yellow warning light appearing on the dashboard.
This could indicate a potential issue with the battery system.
Owners are being advised to have their vehicles checked even if no warning signs are present.
Volkswagen said the issue will be resolved through testing and software updates.
Technicians will inspect the battery modules and replace any faulty components free of charge.
Owners are asked to contact authorised service centres and provide recall codes to arrange repairs.
Volkswagen owners should look for recall code 93MI, while Cupra drivers should use code 93S4.

The driver’s side interior dash

The VIN can be read from the outside through the viewing window in the windshield. The viewing window is at the side of the lower section of the windshield in front of the driver seat.

My Buzz is affected… The letter says they could have it a few hours or days if modules need to replaced… seems like days is more likely going by posts on Buzz groups. I’ve mailed VW back asking if I get a courtesy car if their update renders the car unusable(!)

If cells are replaced, owners should be looking for a detailed report. Not just " pack re-configuration" or some such. It's akin to head gasket work on an ICE.

It doesn't recognise mine either. I presume it is because the link brings you to the website for VW in America. The Irish VW site will recognise your VIN.

A module is merely a group of cells.

Recalls happen with every manufacturer sooner or later, especially with newer tech like EV batteries. At least VW seems to be dealing with it proactively — better a precautionary recall than problems being ignored. Hopefully inspections and updates are quick for owners.

Indeed VW have a great record with dealing with issues properly! It will be interesting to see how they concluded only certain vehicles require work on the HV system.

From what I've read it's a manufacturing fault on some cells, modules. They have a database of which cells are in which cars.

You'll have a whole load of other problems with Renault. Charging malfunctions, 12V batteries sh!tting themselves. Infotainment systems that stutter and go into a coma. That's before we get into motor problems, insulation faults and wasn't there a parking brake recall on the Megane E-Tech?

Was leapmotor preaching for a while, now back to Renault

I have both a VW product and a renault product, luckily both are relatively new and I havent had a single problem with either yet but I couldnt be sure which will have problems first. I am on facebook owners groups for both, and trust me, Renault has as many problems as any other. Not necessarily worse, just not exactly a shining light for reliability.

Toyota hybrids having 12v battery problems, Hyundais and Kias having ICCU problems….no manufacturer is immune to it.

AFAIK. The parts that are the problem are not made by VW. Its an external supplier.

They make parts/batteries for other makes also.

I dont even mind that too much, I'd still allow an opinion as a lot of us have opinions of cars we've never owned or sat in. Prob second hand opinions.

Ye that parts not made by Renault but by there supplier. Yes it was a stupid comment I said earlier ok. These things happens ok. Whats impprtant is that it is been sorted.
