so driving a Model Y Tesla

was charging for free in work but changed jobs recently so looking to have a charger installed , not using a grant

what is a good one to install ? not looking to get solar panels but who knows in the future

i want to come home , plug it in and for it to automatically charge at set time

Any charger. Set the charger to “alwasy on” and use the Tesla app to schedule the charge time

That's the risk with "always on" chargers.

Small risk, but a risk nonetheless. When I'm away from home other than out & about, I shut down the charger in the app so nobody can roll onto the driveway and plug in.

Any will do, I would look at the Tesla one for convenience (Auto flap opening/finish charging) if you don't need any smart features. May be a few people here with loads of referral points who wold sell you one cheap..🙂.

As mentioned by others, use the car timer to set charge times, very reliable. And if you go solar in the future most people now don't use surplus for charging car, better to export by day and only charge on cheaper night rates.

I would never worry about others using our charge point, have a camera watching the area anyway.

Excellent UK reviews as it’s widely used there - installers may push you towards zappi, not because it’s the best (it’s not) - but because it’s the only one they’re familiar with installing (I kid you not)

Whatever one you decide on , just ensure first that you find the installer that’s experienced in fitting it so you’ll be up and running fuss free.

Any time someone says "what about if someone just rocks up and plugs into my charger", I think that that could never happen. Who is dumb enough to sit on your driveway on a slow AC charge point and steal your electricity in plain sight… but apparently those people do exist!

It must be a super rare thing though.

Some charge points dont allow a charge to start until you swipe an RFID card or enter a PIN. You are into the smart charge point area then though. Even with your sisters experience I would consider how likely it is to happen in your specific locality and decide if you really want to be messing with PIN's and RFID cards everytime you use it for the extremely rare case where someone might try it on. Just put a camera on it if it bothers you that much and cut the power to it when you go on holidays.

I took the RFID cards off our work chargers because they were a pain in the hole to administer and just left them open to staff

Last week I caught a strange woman plugging into our charger and heading off in another car, not a hope she thought it was public, it was Saturday I'd say she just thought nobody was here. Just turned off at the isolator so she came back to zero charge

You should give the reg to the Gardai. Its stealing. Even if you didnt take it any further they would have it on the system for future reference.

Mine is tethered (Hypervolt pro 3) and you can lock it on the app - so essentially unless I open it they’ll be sitting there all day keeping my house nice and safe with a car in the driveway waiting for godot 😀

Had Fokearn out yesterday to install a tethered Sync EV charger. Fokearn lads were great, would definitely recommend them. And they do the grant application for you.

Waiting on my EV so I haven't tried it yet but app seems simple to use. Charger is tidy with just a small LED that can be dimmed.

One possible issue, the handle rests in a kind of holster at the front of the charger. Guy from Fokearn said the rubber cap should stay on it because if water gets to the contacts it voids the warranty, but the handle doesn't fit well with the rubber cap on... I don't think it would take much for it to fall out to be honest.

I have the same charger from Fokearn - I actually don't think that is a holster for the tethered version. Rather, that 'holster' is for if you get the untethered version (this is where you would plug into the charger).

Do you use it as a holster, or something else? I'd you Google it they all show it being used as the holster.

The main thing is I don't want it swinging around hitting the wall, or for the rubber cover to come off and the contacts to get wet.

I see what you mean by google images. I also have the rubber cover and it doesn't fit right in the 'holster'.

I just have mine wrapped around the unit and leave it hanging - it doesn't sway much as there is very little slack.
