    Hello,

Currently looking at buying a new to me second hand car. Planing on spending in and 12,000. Looking at 1.6 diesel toyota avensis or a 1.4 diesel corolla, both similar km. Corolla slightly cheaper.

Which would you suggest? Or any other good choices at that price range?

Totally different cars and avensis likely to be higher mileage ?

They said the mileage is the same, and they are hardly totally different cars

The Avensis has the BMW N47 engine whereas the Corolla has Toyota's own engine. The 1.6 isn't as robust as the Toyota D4Ds. The Corolla gearboxes can be weak but if it feels & sounds ok then it probably is fine. All that said, it all depends on the individual cars - one might be a complete lemon or could have been well looked after so service history and current condition mean a lot.

Thanks I didn't release that 16 corollas had a toyota engine, the BMW engine was putting me off that year of toyotas completely.

Both look ok but corolla has the fsh

I've not heard great things about the either, but need a new car and don't want to spend too much money.

Second hand car market is brutal these days

You will get much better value in Korean cars , what about a ceed instead of a corolla or an i40 instead of an Avensis ?

Do they have the same reliability? I've mainly had toyota's and skoda's which took very little maintenance.

Renault Megane is worth a look at. 1.5 dci engine is very reliable and pretty good on fuel.

    Eg:

1.4D4D is a very reliable older design from Toyota. Slow, but economical and dependable.

The BMW engines fitted to the Avensis are junk. There are whole YouTube channels dedicated to horror stories of timing chain failures on them. Apparently with religious servicing from new at much shorter intervals than the manufacturer's recommendation i.e 10-15k km they can be OK. But buying a second hand one is playing timing chain roulette.

15k is the Toyota recommended interval. I had a 2.0 n47 in an Avensis for a few years. Did about 150k kms on it (had less than 10k when I got it) Remapped it soon enough out of warranty. No real issues other than an aux belt tensioner.

Think the BMW interval was closer to 30k km and that caused most of the issues.
