Trouble with Neighbours

Hi,

I am looking for some advice as we are at our wits’ end. We have neighbours Roma Gypsies living next door whose behaviour is having a serious impact on our quality of life.

There is constant noise screaming banging , including children screaming and banging late into the night( do not know when they sleep), I know she has also assaulted someone but they are afraid to report . As a result, of the noise we are currently sleeping on a mattress in the sitting room as they are unable to sleep in the bedroom.

We are unable to move due to the current rental market, so we feel completely stuck. We have tried to get help, but nothing has been done, and their landlord has been unresponsive and does not care.

Any guidance would be appreciated, as the situation is becoming unbearable.

Check if the landlord is a registered first,

If not that is one bit of leverage.

Well if his rental is not registered he is breaking the law and presumably you could threaten to report him to whichever appropriate authority. Might be worth exhausting other options first. For example what does your Landlord have to say about this situation?

Also if neighbour is renting to Roma's its probably through the council soo almost certainly is registered.

Sorry to hear this OP it's an awful situation. We had something very similar many years ago in our first house the people who bought beside us were just the absolute worst, kids jumping into our back garden, constant noise, shouting even fighting on occasion.

We made an attempt to approach them about it in the hope of a resolution but basically got told to mind our own business then the rubbish bags began to be thrown over the back wall every now and then. We ended up just selling up and moving on to our second home and we've never looked back.

I've heard of people make detailed records of bad neighbours and reporting them but we just didn't see the point as they had bought the house there was nothing we could do and couldn't face the best years of our life raising our kids beside these people. On the whole from what i've heard landlords don't care as long as the money keeps coming in. Good luck hope it works out.

We had similar issues and every time it kicked off at night, we called the Guards. If you hear people arguing and kids screaming at night, I would keep calling the Guards saying you're concerned someone is being hurt. They might get sick of them knocking at their door and calm it down. Might be worth a shot anyway. Good luck with it all.

Because everyone is so woke, I won’t say that you and maybe a few friends / relations of the ‘big and strong’ type should knock in for a quick chat.

Let them know that they won’t get away with their usual BS.

This crowd couldn’t give a flying saucer about laws, rules, decency.

And anything that isn't nailed down will be stolen.

I’m also aware that these nightmares are never going to change.

No amount of trying to reason with them will change their behaviour. Lock everything down (even your recycling)

It makes no difference where they're from. We had a bad experience in our first house with two Irish women next door (they owned that house). Frequent parties, arguments with boyfriends at all hours and rubbish in our back garden (cigarette butts, plastic pint glasses etc). We approached them a few times and got door slammed in our face or sworn at when they were drunk. The pair had a falling out, moved out and rented it to Irish fellas, who were just as bad. Arguments, drunkeness, drugs etc. We had to go through RTB and eventually got those tenants removed. House went up for sale and was bought by a Romanian family, who were a dream. Never had trouble after that.

OP, this is what we did:

1. Call the gards everytime there's arguing, noise from the house. Keep a record of it.
2. Send a letter to the landlord everytime with details (you'll need to get their address somehow).
3. Find the landlord on the RTB and open a dispute. This will go to mediation: RTB will try to reach an agreement between you and landlord, over the phone, and set rules around acceptable behaviour.

Keep doing above if it continues. It's painful, but it worked for us.

If the landlord is not registered with the RTB, then you can report them. Make this known to landlord and it might help things along.
