Opel Insignia

Hi all. Considering buying one of these newer type 2017 on. Diesel doing about 15k km annually. 1.6 or 2.0 not sure. Anybody have one or any opinions, have their reputation improved. Seem like alot of car for the money. Currently driving a 2009 passat 2.0 110. My budget is around 12k.

Unless you're doing 15,000km of pure motorway driving, a modern diesel does not suit your usage.

There are much better cars out there than an Insignia

I'd tend to avoid diesel at that mileage especially Insignia diesels which are not exactly known for being robust.

But overall Insignia's are cheap for a reason as there are much better cars out there but they cost a bit more.

Hadn't really considered petrol. Are they better engines than the diesel

Are there better cars out there in a reliability or just in a better driving way ? Opel tend to build mediocre cars anyway

Want reliability of course. Don't want to end up discovering that the model has known issues after purchase. Would a mondeo be a better choice. VAG are a little bit more expensive

They are all diesel. Prius, Corolla, Auris etc would be better

1.6 diesel Opels of that vintage are known to do their timing chains in because of a poor design of the original chain tensioner. It's a huge job both physically and in terms of expenses to get it replaced (nearly two days labour)

Neither is better - they both have their pros and cons. If you do a lot of long trips (more than 45 minutes at a time) on an uncontested motorway, you’ll get great efficiency and probably have no problems. If you don’t, you’ll have endless DPF problems.

Fair play but that doesn't make the Insignia as a whole "one of the most robust cars."

And what makes you think driving it hard will have any effect on how reliable it is? A car doesn't just become robust by being driven hard.

I had several petrol insignias and never had a single day's bother with any of them. I had PDF issues with a diesel but the petrols were great cars. They get bad press on Boards, and to each their own, but I couldn't fault them.

I suspect alot of issues are caused by poor maintenance like not changing oil within recommended intervals. Some cars you can get away with like toyotas but causes issues with others

They are cheap for a reason and it's not because of poor maintenance by former owners.
