The Amgen Irish Open will be held at the Trump International Golf Links Ireland, Doonbeg from 9 - 13 September 2026, following a year filled with incredible golf and Rory McIlroy's spectacular win at The K Club.

Now we are into 2026 and the countdown is on for the Amgen Irish open I thought now would be a good time to open a thread.

I assume we’ll have Rory and Shane there anyway, I haven’t heard any other big names yet.

I think the Internet and the World have already had enough of Trump so can we make this thread about the golf please

I will not be attending or putting myself forwards for any volunteering (which i did in the K-Klub).

Id expect attendances will be way down this year

The course itself could be a good test but access is going to be a disaster.

For that reason alone, I don't think this course should have been considered.

Unless they have exceptional traffic management, people will just give up, turn around and head for home.

No desire to attend or support it this year. External factors aside, from what i've gathered, it will be a logistical nightmare

The course is great, that there is no doubt but the road network around it is totally not fit for purpose

I'd always try attend when its Munster based but on this occasion I'll definitely be giving it a skip.

Sounds like the logistic issues will self solve if low numbers!!

Due to high security it's unlikely that the course will be sabotaged.

I'd say it's likely that a vehicle or two will break down each day on the limited narrow public roads to the venue.

This might aswell be in Ballyliffin to me..disaster to get to and wont be going.

Doonbeg is a lovely golf course, some great holes so look forward to seeing that aspect of it, Orange turd of an owner aside but logistically will be a nightmare, there is only one small road into the place, not even sure where they can do the park and ride's from which will likely be a good distance away

I normally go every year but Doonbeg is a long way from me in Donegal.

Was looking forward to going too but changed my mind when the venue was announced.

    Hopefully in 27

we have always gone for a day , but this is too far to watch 5 hours golf..

Hoping to go myself - I promised my kids I would bring them to the next one and its only 2 hours to Doonbeg so why not. If boards.ie is a good sample size and everybody else doesnt go, we'll get to it handy ;)

Appreciate the moderators - not moderating on this topic.

It would seem it will not be possible to talk about the Irish Open this year without the politics of the event coming up.

I wonder will they experience any Ice delays 😬

One wonders was it politics that created the event in the first place.

I think himself is interested in attending according to his son.

regardless of access. Is there room to host a tournament there? Looks very compact on Google maps. Not much room for grandstands/ fan village etc.

Never been there so maybe there is.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 412 ✭✭Break80

I stayed there a few years back. This was when the owner was just a huge ego and hadn't designs on World domination.

I must say we were treated very well. Driven and collected from the village after a night out, good service and food etc.

The course itself is as good as any top links in the country. Access is tight. From what I remember I don't think you could build too many grandstands.

Maybe with the smaller crowds it would be traditional walk around tournament but there's a lot of dunes with no pathways. Certainly no space for tented villages which is the bread and butter of any Irish Open.

what other courses were in for hosting?

I had heard co. Sligo which would have been better for access, history etc plus no moral ickiness

would be a great shout albeit maybe pros would tear apart on a non windy day

doonbeg is just a strange strange choice based on owner alone

Of course it will be a great occasion for the community in West Clare. We don't get too many big occasions. Good weather hopefully!

I hope all decent golfers in this country think twice about supporting this event.

If attendances are low that will tell it's own story about what people in this country think about this place and the creep who owns it. In the time when two courageous U S. citizens have been executed by Trump's thugs, can we really just look at this as a good day out .…?

The European Tour need a kick up the ars* too.

And we wonder why Moderators do their best, What's the point

Portstewart is sort of gearing up for another Irish open in the very near future , 2028 been mooted, an awful lot of work been done by European Tour golf design company the last few years, they were due to have one in 2020 or so but Covid put paid to it, however a lot of members are not really in favour of it, think they say they don’t really need it…

The amount of Green Fee’s they brought in last summer from the Portrush open was mouth watering

Great we can talk about the reality of event on the forum..same with any golf publication and pod ..the politics and how golf engages with public..is an important part of the game and industry.

I genuinely couldn't do the golf forum if it has to exist in a bubble / goldfish bowl...

People can use their hard earned cash to support these billionaires if they wish to - but my own morality prevents me from doing so.

I can obviously understand why it's going to doonbeg, but from an image sense in Ireland it's doing golf no favours. Wrongly, a lot of people view of golf in Ireland as similar to the country club scene in America. Exclusive, snobby, uncaring of ordinary people. And very white. Going to doonbeg will support these views to a lot of people. It says to a lot of people that Irish golf doesn't care about what trump is doing. Other sports shy away from controversial and negative publicity where possible. Golf has done the opposite here. Although I don't think they've any choice.
