New build suggestions

I've been putting off a new build for a while. It never seemed to be the right time with crypto and now AI shenanigans, but my GPU (RX 580) died after Christmas so my hand is being forced a bit.

I'm not sure if it'd be worth salvaging the old build with some second hand parts to keep it ticking over to see if things ever calm down again. Given its age I've mostly been gaming on Steam Deck/Switch for the last few years, but my monitor doesn't work with integrated graphics so now general use is suffering too.

To get the ball rolling I grabbed the Crucial Pro DDR5 RAM 32GB Kit (2x16GB) 6400MHz CL38 game4it70 posted in Bargain Alerts. I then read the last few build threads here and a DDR4 machine might be better in the current climate? To my surprise the DDR5 actually shipped, so I'm not sure whether to return it or keep going.

    1. What is your budget? €1300 (excl. already purchased RAM)
    2. What will be the main purpose of the computer? Gaming, general PC
    3. Do you need a copy of Windows? No
    4. Can you use any parts from an old computer? Just some SATA3 HDDs and SSDs
    5. Do you need a monitor? Not yet, using an old Qnix 27" 1440p (capped at 96hz) for the time being.
    6. Do you need any of these peripherals? No
    7. Are you willing to try overclocking? Yes
    8. How can you pay? Card
    9. When are you purchasing? Now

I believe SSDs are already shooting up and GPUs are predicted next? I can live with 1TB, and I don't plan on going 4k (maybe a higher refresh rate 1440 if I see a nice bargain though).

Other considerations: WiFi isn't a priority as I've ethernet; airflow/quietness over RGB and glass; positioned under desk so power/front panel on top rather than floor level.

    Open to suggestions. Thanks!

Surely you can use the case and possibly PSU again?

Stay with a DDR5 build. The only reason people are talking about building on AM4 is due to memory pricing and since you already have the DDR5 you do not have to go that route. You have all the 7000 or 9000 CPU's to choose from. So plenty of options all down to how much you want to spend.

I suppose I could. After 12 years the USB ports are a bit dodgy though, I've to do any big transfers via a back port. Not sure if it's a fixable issue.

Do PSUs last? I'm not sure what suddenly killed the GPU.

I have a Lian Li LANCOOL 216 that cost just over €100 and I'm happy with it - spacious and quiet with good airflow.

I'd shy away from a 14 year old PSU for a new build. And if the case is that old as well you could be missing air filters which is important for a case sitting on the ground. And the USB ports are all old UDB 2.0.

Could spend a little more for the Montech XR case which is a fish tank design and has USB-C ports on the front panel. Ignore the RGB, you can turn those off.
