We are so back. That's right; Fantasy Critic returns for 2026.

    captain.jpg

It's the competition where you score points by predicting the critical success of games that are expected to release in the coming year. As ever, the game is open to all boardsies. If you haven't played before, just follow these steps to get started.

    • Sign up at Fantasy Critic using the same/similar username as here on boards. Send me said username so that I can add you to our league (The Deacon St. John Memorial Cup).
    • Come up with a list of games you think will review well in 2026. If you need suggestions, use the watchlist feature under Player Actions on the league's page - a list of about 10-15 games should be enough for the draft phase. You can even pick games that haven't been announced yet, so long as they're available on Fantasy Critic's database (e.g. Half Life 3).
    • When you've been added to the league, come up with a name for your publishing company (essentially your team name for this year's competition).

    The Draft

The next phase is the draft, where we add games to our rosters. The FC site will randomly generate the draft order. We use a "snake draft" in our league whereby the person who has to go last in the first round of drafting goes first in the next round. So, if our league were to have 4 teams, the first 9 picks would go Team A, B, C, D, D, C, B, A, A.

In order to save time and much ball ache, I'll enter everyone's picks manually on the site. Therefore, you must PM me here on boards with your list of picks in order of preference by January 15th. Please ensure that all your picks are designated as "Available" on the Fantasy Critic website. In other words, don't choose any games prohibited by our league's specific rules (see Eligibility (tags) below). And it would be a great help to me if you could please use the title of the game as it is entered on the FC database.

To ensure fairness, I'll PM my own list to another player, and provide the final draft spreadsheet in this thread so everyone can verify that their picks were processed correctly and fairly. When everyone's initial roster is complete, we'll choose our counter picks.

    Counter Picks

A counter pick is a game from another player's roster, but instead of choosing one that you think will review well, you choose one that you think will either review relatively poorly, or that won't even release in 2026. We'll draft just one counter pick each for this season, with the player who went last in the regular draft getting to go first.

    Pickup Games

The remainder of your roster is made up of pickup games, which are chosen over the course of the year. This allows you to add newly announced or overlooked games to your roster. Any player interested in acquiring a new game will place a secret "bid" on Fantasy Critic for said game using some of their annual budget ($100 per player). The game(s) and amount(s) you bid will be private, but our own house rule is that you must immediately announce that you have made a bid in this thread.

On Saturday evenings at 8PM Eastern time (either midnight or 1AM our time, depending on daylight savings), the system will process those bids. The highest bidder for any given game will have the game added to their roster, losing the money that they bid. The other players keep their money but will have to find other game(s) to add to their line-up.

    Dropping Games

In order to keep things competitive, players are allowed to drop three unreleased games from their roster over the course of the year. For example, if you find out that a game of yours has had its release date pushed back to 2027, it's been cancelled altogether, or just previewing poorly prior to release, you can drop it and replace it with a different pickup game. The exception to this is if your game has been counter picked by another player, in which case you're stuck with it!

Drops are processed on Saturday night/Sunday morning immediately before bids are. This means that if your roster is full, you can still drop a game and bid on a new one at the same time.

    Eligibility (tags)

Tags are assigned to games on the Fantasy Critic website, basically putting them into specific categories. Leagues can then decide which categories they want their players to be able to choose from. These are the tag settings for our league.

    tags.png

The tag system isn't perfect as some games feel like they could be in a different category to the one that they've been assigned to, but we're just going to abide by Fantasy Critic's decisions on this front.

    Scoring

Your games are awarded points based on their aggregate score over on Open Critic. For every point above a score of 70 on Open Critic, your game gets you one point in our league. For every point below 70, you lose a point. According to the creator of Fantasy Critic, very bad games won't hurt your score too much - essentially, you can never lose more than 20 points no matter how bad a game is.

If a game doesn't release during the year in question, it is treated as if it scored 70 and therefore scores you 0 points.

Games that score over 90 on Open Critic can really boost your overall score as every point above 90 is worth two points instead of one.

Counter picks work in the opposite way. Any Open Critic score above 70 loses you points, and below 70 gains you points. Targeting games that you think might slip into 2027 is supposedly a good tactic for choosing your counter pick.

    Examples of the scoring system at work from FC;

Awesome Mr. Crispy and thanks again!

The big question will be if gta 6 will actually be released in November. I can see it being pushed to March 27 to make the fiscal year but get extra crunch in over Christmas. Will be risky pick but easy 30 points if releases in 26.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 8,815 ✭✭✭Mr Crispy

Would anyone be ballsy enough to counter pick it though? I know I wouldn't! In which case it could be dropped by the owner should it slip to 2027.

I think it's a case that it needs to come out then. No doubt it will be a swansong for the generation. The question is will it be a cyberpunk? I doubt it but could release buggy.

List of games sent there Crispy. Now my fate is in the hands of the Gods…and Penn.

Nice one. I'll check in with Penn later to see if he allows all your picks.

PSA. The games i chose are purely and 100% abily in the order of wankability as i believe that's what gets high scores these days.

List sent there. Bit confused by counter picks/bidding etc but assume ill figure it out.

The first year, is a bit of a learning experience but once the draft is done, Crispy will explain next steps. The counter pick example. You draft GTA 6. I then choose GTA 6 as my counter pick which means it's locked in for you and you can't drop it. That way, if it gets delayed to 2027, you will get minus points as a penalty. If it does get released in 2026, i will get minus points. So it just adds a bit of drama 😊

As for the bids, we will each have $100 dollars for bids so if The Last of Us 3 gets announced during the year and they say it will release in 2026, I would go to the league site and there will be an option to bid on it. Then, each Sunday, bids are finalized and whoever bid the highest money gets the game drafted into their team. They are secret bids so no one will know how much you spent and even what game, you just have to announce here if a bid has been made.

Yeah, with counter-picking you're basically betting against a specific game doing well. In Zero's example you'd both score 0 points if the game is delayed beyond 2026 or cancelled altogether (FC treats these games as having scored exactly 70 on Open Critic). Scoring 0 for your counter-pick is a good result really. More important is that the person who was stuck with that game suddenly has one less game in their roster to score points from! But counter-picking can backfire too - Retro counter-picked The Outer Worlds 2 last season, but it scored 83 on Open Critic, costing Retro 13 points on his total.

Zero is spot on with bidding, but it will become clearer once a few bids have been placed early on.

There's still plenty of time to get your lists in and set your publisher names etc, but I thought I'd take this opportunity to ask if everyone is happy with the league settings for the season? Any tags you'd add or remove? Happy with the number of games we're selecting etc? Any boardsies we could convince to join in? 😁

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 8,815 ✭✭✭Mr Crispy

@Penn's publisher name is both brilliant and infuriating.

Pssst you still have to choose how you want your prize from last season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 37,518 ✭✭✭✭Penn

For those who come after…. me in first place for the third time.

As for the prize, I'll go Steam if I can. Thanks Mr.Crispy!

    PM sent.

    Also, welcome aboard to @Potential-Monke!

    ______________________________________________________________________________

I just remembered that we added another pickup slot for everyone during last season. As such, this season's settings are only giving us one more pickup slot than last year, even though we agreed we wanted more. So shall I increase pickup slots from 7 to say 9?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 37,518 ✭✭✭✭Penn

I'd say maybe 8 pickup slots, just on account of the fact we have 2 extra players this year (Welcome new players! I'm your two-time reigning Champion, Penn), so where last year we had 7 players with a total of 11 games each for 77 games, this year if we went 13 total games (5 draft and 8 pickups) each for 9 players, that would be 117 games. It could be harder to find games even worth bidding on and fill out slots. Happy to go with the consensus though.

    I'd say 8 be plenty

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 8,815 ✭✭✭Mr Crispy

Fair point about the extra players, although I didn't want to assume everyone would be returning.

Thanks for having me, might as well give it a shot, not that I'm great at predictions and have a... different taste to most mainstream. I've only ever being involved in fantasies in my head so new to this craic. Just a couple of questions if ye dont mind:

1: I need to come up with a list of 10-15 but initially will only be getting 5 based on draft order? The rest, if not selected, i can use as pick ups throughout the year? And do i need to include my counter draft pick in the pm?

2: Can I change my publisher name if I think of something wittier?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 37,518 ✭✭✭✭Penn

    1. Yes, any game on your list which isn't drafted by you or another player can be bid on whenever you want, so you could even bid right after the draft is finalised. As for the counterpick, you don't include it in your PM as we have to wait for everyone's five games to be put up, then we will be invited to post our counterpick on this thread in the same order as the draft (so for instance you might want to counterpick GTA6 believing it will be delayed again until next year, but if you're #5 in the draft order, someone before that might already choose it as their counterpick so you would have to counterpick a different game).
    2. Yes, on the left hand side of the FC page, it's listed under Player Actions ("Change Publisher Name"). I believe you can still do it throughout the year.

    Thanks @Penn

Something I've just thought of there now… I normally upload the Excel file with everyone's picks on it so that we can all verify the draft was handled correctly and fairly. Obviously I'll continue to do that, but would ye all prefer if I omitted any games of yours that weren't needed for the draft, thus hiding your potential interest in them as pick-ups??

All that matters is beating me apparently, which after this year isn't that difficult.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,832 ✭✭✭✭Zero-Cool

Oooo gta 6 will be such a dodgy pick.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 8,815 ✭✭✭Mr Crispy

Damn. Wish they had held onto that news for another week or so. 😅

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 8,815 ✭✭✭Mr Crispy

Just a reminder that there's a week left to register and get your lists in. That means you also have a week to amend your list if you've already PMed it to me.

@Zero-Cool I think I've emailed you my list in the past? Mind if I do it again to ensure fairness?

Just waiting on a couple of players to set up their publisher on the website and get their lists in to me, although I'm guessing you might give it a miss this year @DeSelby83 ?
