Sephiroth Dude and Deja Boo brings us up to 14. Thank you all very much.

First YouTube playlist for the 2025 category is ready and I will start listening tomorrow. If there aren't any big distractions, I aim for a Monday or Tuesday reveal.

As a reveal build-up, I'll be sharing songs that fit the theme of each category. That might give everyone an indication of where they stand, although as we have very well established, unpredictability is the keyword!!

Upcoming gigs and events: Dry Cleaning, The Shawshank Redemption, Sprints, These Charming Men, Sasha Velour, Disorder Festival, David Byrne, The Cure, Garbage, Bob The Drag Queen, Sigur Ros, Olafur Arnalds, Cabaret Voltaire, Angine de Poitrine, Cardinals

Ooh, I missed this when it was first advertised….. unfortunately I'm on online meetings tonight, and on the road half of tomorrow so it would be at least tomorrow evening before I'd get to even attempt an entry - and looking at the categories, it might be a struggle to come up with a song at all for one or two of them!

Speaking of which, does it have to be a "song" - ie with words? Do tunes count? Or would that just guarantee me last place in each category, so why bother???

Having said/asked all that, it might be too late to enter - if so, I'll enjoy looking at/listening to all the entries!

I routinely enter lyric-less tunes, don't let anyone tell you it's not allowed!

Whether they score well is a different matter 🤣

    @HeidiHeidi

If you can send selections by Friday, I can include you in the competition. If you are struggling with any of the categories, at least send me your selection for the first category (a song released during 2025). That's the only category I'm focusing on this week.

And, of course, it doesn't have to be a song. Instrumentals are perfectly fine and on occasion they have scored very high with me.

@Leg End Reject thank you very much for tagging more forum gamers 🙂

Anyone who wants to play, similar as above for Heidi: send me your selection for the first category (a 2025 song) ASAP and the rest by end of the week/Sunday.

Upcoming gigs and events: Dry Cleaning, The Shawshank Redemption, Sprints, These Charming Men, Sasha Velour, Disorder Festival, David Byrne, The Cure, Garbage, Bob The Drag Queen, Sigur Ros, Olafur Arnalds, Cabaret Voltaire, Angine de Poitrine, Cardinals

I am pinging @Grid. just to see if it might be fun for them to play.

(G, what we do is pick 7 songs, one from each category that Irish Aris listed in the first post, then PM your list to the host by friday, and Irish Aris does the rest)

SineadSpears and rainbowtrout bring us up to 16.

Final Final call for anyone else that would like to play. I have already started listening to the first category and will continue heavily over the long weekend, so tomorrow (Friday) is the ultimate closing of selections.

Would love to - I have a hard stop appointment with a pint of Guiness later today so I’ll do it then - I’ll probably not supply a 2025 song simply because I haven’t a clue of any but will send you the rest - I assume you accept Spotify links?

So up to 17 people for the first round of 2025. And we will welcome Oscar Madison from the next round, as we couldn't pin down a 2025 songs.

For the first round, the purpose of the Walrus (discover new music) was fully accomplished, as I knew only 2 of the 17 songs that you selected. Ranking will be difficult as there are quite a few songs in the "ah, that's nice/decent" category, so I will have to start splitting hairs. Target remains to do a reveal next week, Friday seems like a realistic target.

In the meantime I will try to keep you all entertained (and the thread active) by sharing songs that fit the category and would have scored you well if you have selected them.

The title of this category (In The Year 2025), was inspired by the oldie In The Year 2525 which I discovered through the Visage cover in the 80s.

But what recent releases did I enjoy in 2025?

Upcoming gigs and events: Dry Cleaning, The Shawshank Redemption, Sprints, These Charming Men, Sasha Velour, Disorder Festival, David Byrne, The Cure, Garbage, Bob The Drag Queen, Sigur Ros, Olafur Arnalds, Cabaret Voltaire, Angine de Poitrine, Cardinals

So In a year where I turned to rock a bit more, the glorious return of Lady Gaga had quite a few songs from the Mayhem album were staples in my playlists.

Later in the year, Gaga released another song, The Dead Dance. The video was directed by Tim Burton and the song was featured in one of the most iconic scenes in the second season of the TV series Wednesday.

Upcoming gigs and events: Dry Cleaning, The Shawshank Redemption, Sprints, These Charming Men, Sasha Velour, Disorder Festival, David Byrne, The Cure, Garbage, Bob The Drag Queen, Sigur Ros, Olafur Arnalds, Cabaret Voltaire, Angine de Poitrine, Cardinals

My 2025 was a very lazy submission because I couldn't think at the time (my mood has vacated this planet lately). It should have been the easiest category of them all 🤷‍♀️.

Gaga is always a great choice 👌

    Looking forward to the reveal.

    ....…

2026: 'This is where something better begins' (←well that plan ain't working out too well)

Mine's a Dublin band, with 89 listeners on Spotify, who have already split up. I've gone very niche 🤣

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,942 ✭✭✭✭Deja Boo

If I found a country song from 2025, God help us all!

It's either charicature old-western twang (ick) or country-rap (crap) now.

I do like Lady Gaga but maximalist feel-good dance pop is pretty much the opposite of what I submitted for my 2025 pick!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,534 ✭✭✭✭rainbowtrout

I went for something more niche, mainly as I came across it recently and thought 'there's an Arts Council grant involved in the making of this video'. And I can't stop laughing at the madness of it.

Another album that I really enjoyed this year was the latest offering by Franz Ferdinand, The Human Fear, released at the beginning of 2025

As the title of the first song below says, they got me hooked.

Alex also attempted a reconnect with his Greek routes with Black Eyelashes, which is inspired by the rebetiko music - he even added a few Greek words and namechecks a few areas of Athens.

Upcoming gigs and events: Dry Cleaning, The Shawshank Redemption, Sprints, These Charming Men, Sasha Velour, Disorder Festival, David Byrne, The Cure, Garbage, Bob The Drag Queen, Sigur Ros, Olafur Arnalds, Cabaret Voltaire, Angine de Poitrine, Cardinals

I read all the comments above about what everyone submitted and I am quite intrigued.

At the moment, I'm listening to the songs without knowing/checking who selected what. I intend to find out on the day of the reveal, as we go along.

For the reveal itself: We will do it countdown style… but with a minor change up: we will leave the bottom 3 for the end, like we used to do, to increase the suspense.

    So the sequence will be: 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, - then 15, 3, 16, 2, 17, 1.
