Titleist TSR fairway wood head "exploded"

My beloved TSR2 4-wood suddenly burst after a shot last month. The head shattered on impact and a sharp piece flew up past my face (thankfully missed!). No visible damage beforehand, no abuse, and it’s only had light use.

I contacted Titleist to see if I could send the head back to them and find out whether this is a known issue, as I’ve a matching TSR 7-wood bought at the same time. They said they no longer arrange returns from Ireland due to Brexit and to go through an authorised dealer. I did that, and was then told that because I bought it used (privately from a PGA pro in June 2023), the contract of sale is with the seller and not with them, so they’re washing their hands of it. Not sure how I feel about hitting the 7-wood now!

It’s was a 2-year-old club, outside the 1-year warranty, but it was almost new as it’s had very few reps.

So do modern fairway woods explode now these days as part of the lightweight crown design? Anyone had similar with titliest fairway woods?

It's a stinger as I paid €600 for two almost new clubs with upgraded custom shafts in my spec and figured I've have them for years 😣

..right after it happened. The missing piece shot off the head and wasn't far off my face! Broken pieces of it are very sharp, and it wouldn't have been pretty!

wow, never heard of this one, have heard of heads coming loose from the face, faces cracking etc from all brands but never this. I have the tsr2 16.5 head also and never had a problem, although gone back to 15 in the gt3.

have seen it happen a couple of times in the last few yrs

must have been a hairline fracture somewhere on the crown before it exploded on you

Sadly that's the danger of buying 2nd hand clubs.

hhopefully you might pick up another one for the shaft you have.

TLDR: I hit the ball so hard Titleist haven't come up with the technology to make clubs that don't explode when I hit them.

That's a long post for that sneaky brag roadrunner. Anyway, I'm off to start a thread now on whether 3 quarter length trousers are allowed on golf courses. Normal length trousers just don't protect my modesty.

Get me a pair of those trousers too 🙂

No I don't think this was a "me" problem this time. Manufacturing defect I was thinking.

I had my driver head collapse and crack right through, out of warranty but I contacted manufacturer anyhow, all they did was offer a discount code for an online purchase with them which I did not take up as much cheaper to replace locally.

The annoying bit was it was the second hole and I was playing two rounds that day with a 36hole matchplay for a few coins thrown in too

My stuff on Adverts, mostly Tesla Pre Highland Model 3

Ring up Titleist US customer support… Tell them your case and you can't find an answer…

I did it a number with Taylormade and they replaced the lot with the most recent clubs… US Customer support is better than the Brits…

Rem there is a huge margin on Golf Clubs and say you been chatting with people online and are really suprised because everyone else thinks you are great… (i.e. Play the Game)

Being secondhand does cause a manufacturing fault. If club makers want their clubs to not deprecate like a rock they have to cover manufacturing defects… In the past I have had a driver from Ping replaced and a driver and three wood from Taylormade replaced due to defects…

I have also have golf shoes from Footjoy (Titleist company) replaced by local golf shop which I bought online… Titleist told me to go there, didn't even bring a receipt… Got a great deal as he had mine there (but not in my size) way over priced. I got that as credit and bought that years model (bought for £60 exchanged for €220)…

Important to tell them that you are discussing this online and you were recommended to contact them… Manufactures are very scared that their vastly over priced high margin product has an quality issue problem…

I had the face of a Wilson Staff Driving iron collapse in a few years ago. I had bought it from Golfbidder. Wilson Staff were completely disinterested because I had bought it second hand, even though club was pretty new. Golfbidder though gave me a full refund without question straight away as was within their 12 month warranty period. More a ringing endorsement for Golfbidder really, as some protection when you’re buying clubs second hand.
