Generator size and type

Hi all, I've been reading lots of other posts here about generators, but still have some questions. I've got an electrician to wire an outdoor socket for a generator, this is connected to a mechanical changeover switch beside the consumer unit. The electrician has also installed surge protection in the consumer unit, so that job seems to be done fine.

Their house is a standard bungalow, solid fuel range, open fire with back boiler, oil heating, no electric shower, and has a gas hob also. Usual other stuff, tv's fridge two freezers etc.

What size generator would be recommended for this house? Electrician recommended 8kVa +.

I think they should also buy an inverter type generator, however sales people are saying the following,

    1. Generators with AVR technology are fine.
    2. The consumer unit surge protection will prevent a standard generator damaging sensitive electronics

I don't believe either of the above to be true, how could a surge protector prevent under voltages etc? I'm located in the west, any known good suppliers in this area?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards Padraic

Is this just as a standby generator for an occasional power outage?

Any reason why they would need 8KVA? Would a 3KW inverter model not fulfil most of their needs?
