    Who is VPI: 

     

    VPI is a UK-based power company, providing energy to the National Grid. We are part of the UK’s pathway to Net Zero, complementing the increase in renewable energy to power homes and businesses.  

     

    In Ireland VPI have a growing presence, we are building new flexible generation capacity including a 275MW open cycle gas turbine plant in County Westmeath that is set to enter commercial operation in 2025. 

     

    We also own and operate two 100MW energy storage facilities at Shannonbridge and Lumcloon, making us one of Ireland’s largest battery operators. 

     

    Together, these plants play an important role in supporting grid stability and are already supporting the development of further renewable projects in the area. 

     

    The Work Placement Position: 

     

    • A student work placement with VPI is a great opportunity to put the theory you are learning into practise.  
    • You will have the opportunity to make a tangible difference, learning valuable skills as you start out on your career, at an operational site and within an energy storage facility. 
    • You will get hands on experience with a range of projects and variety of challenges that arise. 
    • You will be working collaboratively with your team to find the best solutions, utilising your problem-solving skills, and leveraging your knowledge gained at university.  
    • You will have the opportunity to work on systems ranging from gas and steam turbines, heat recovery steam generators (HRSG’s), and the associated auxiliary system items including compressors, pumps, and pneumatic & hydraulic valves. 
    • Project specific works throughout your placement year will include working with the site team on the annual maintenance of their Gas Turbines, Steam Turbines & Heat Recovery Steam Generators (HRSG’s). 

     

    Desired Qualifications and Skills: 

     

    • Working towards a degree in a MEng, BEng or BSc in an Engineering discipline. Please include details of modules taken. 
    • A positive 'can do' mentality, self-motivated, setting the right behaviours. 
    • An ability to think laterally and flexibly to deliver solutions and a 'process driven' focus to delivery. 
    • Desire to learn about the UK power market 
    • Good organisational and communication skills  
    • Strong IT and Microsoft office capabilities 
    • A valid Driving License is essential as our sites are remote 
    • Practical work experience (not necessarily in the Power industry) is an advantage 
    • A basic understanding of gas turbine fundamentals would also be advantageous but not essential.
