    Hello,

We are currently getting work done and one item that was flagged was that the Tails need to be upgraded from a "10" to a "16" along with some other electrical work. (We already have a quote for the electrical but this is additional)

The quote for the additional items arrived today and after informal talk recently it seemed it wouldn't cost too much but it's €7k.

    Is this reasonable?

    Extract from quote below.

    Thank you.

Additional electrical items - 2 down lighters - ESB tails upgrade - earth
bonding - new earth rod chamber - Periodic inspection cert - RECI cert -
    test and commission 1.00 itm 7,000.00 7,000.00

how long is the 'run' from your meter to the consumer board? we had ours done a few years ago when getting ev charger installed - cost about an additional 800 on top of the charger / install. Ours was about 4 meters distance.

The run is about 5 metres max. At the end of the hall.

So 12,700 total? Or 8k total, so 1,300 uplift?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 189 ✭✭paulpd

12,700 in total. Just met with them. Tails includes certificate etc etc. Just seems pricey to me.

I paid less to that to completely rewire a whole (3 bed) house in 2022, including an earth rod, coax, ethernet, spare circuits for a future extension, smoke alarms, car charger wiring, tails upgrade, meter move (had to pay ESB Networks ~450 for that too) and enough plug sockets to make it look like an office building. Also wall channelling and plastering afterwards.

Install got inspected by Safeelectric as a random audit without issue, so it wasn't someone cheap and dodgy.

This feels like a Piss Off quote to me, they'll take it but they don't want it.

Seems dear. But what would I know. Get other quotes.

They're mid job. Started mid October so these are additional "unforeseen" stuff.

    Thanks for the replies.

3 bed semi with conservatory and attic conversion. Dublin.

In order to get my tails upgraded, I first need the house wiring to be regularised.

Needs earth rod, bonding done, and complete rewire. €16.5 k was the quote, last year.

Mrs N refuses to allow it, due to the necessary destruction it will cause.

Fortunately, the house hasn't burnt down yet.

If she's anything like my wife, if there is a problem it will still be your fault.

    🤣🤣🤣

Well, I've issued all the instructions...

No electric shower during cooking periods and vice versa. No electric car unless we fix the electrics. No immersion at the same time as anything else. Christmas with guests staying over is going to be fun. "Showers AFTER breakfast, please" Don't like it, blame your mother. 😁😁😁

I got a full house retire for. Not much more. 15k before VAT. 4 bed in south Dublin. Obviously included tails, early rod, consumer unit etc

also included the plasterer to make good all walls. Not all sparks will include that in the price

    You need a new sparks.

ESB networks are regulated and the price for tails is fixed. €202.98 + VAT

He wasn’t charged €1,700 for tails. He must have got something else like a MIC upgrade
