Anyone on here import a car from Germany to Ireland?

What the charges apart from vrt?

23% vat of cost of car and cost of shipping of car?

Also is insurance higher for left handed cars?

I don't think VAT is charged when importing from EU?

Re insurance, I think I read here recently that a 25% premium is normal for LHD here.

Depends on new or used. But German VAT can be discounted to zero for export.

Used, older car max value €2500

It doesn't really matter a difference what it's costing to buy in Germany. Revenue here will calculate VRT based off what they think the market value is of a similar car is here. They have a minimum market value afaik. Then the VRT bracket will be based off the car's emissions figure. Then you have the Nox charge. Max for a petrol is €600 but for diesel it's much higher depending on the car's Nox figure so you could be paying multiples of that €2500 in taxes.

Basically they don't want to make it worth while importing old polluting cars from abroad.

vat already paid in an EU state so no , its already baked into the german 2nd hand price

how would you get a vrt quote for a left hooker as its resale value/arms length sale price is limited or they dont care about that for OMSP purposes ?

They decide the OMSP and you can appeal it after paying if you so wish

I bought a new bike in from Germany earlier this year, paid the German vat, transported the bike here, then paid vrt and vat here.

Showed the German revenue the recipt for Irish vat and they issued a refund.

The advice above looks sound for a used vehicle >6000km

Is it treated differently if vintage, over 30 years old?

VAT only due on a new car - defined as more than 6 months old or 5000km. In which case you will normally be able to claim it back in the other country. Used car - no VAT.

    >30 year old car means not subject to normal VRT either, instead it's a flat €200 rate and also qualifies for classic car tax.

    Not correct, I'm afraid.

A vehicle is considered to be new if it is less than 6 months old OR has less than 6000km on the odometer.

The vehicle could be 2 years old, but if it has done less than 6000km it is treated as a new vehicle.

Perhaps poor wording sorry -that's what I meant. Although I thought it was 5000km rather than 6000km.
