I'm not being rude but it appears to me that you may need to find a new mechanic. Sounds like they twisted a brake hose when doing the suspension work. The same with the issue with the suspension bolt, sounds like it wasn't reinstalled correctly.

Not to mention them fixing the wrong ball joint in the firsts instance. I think the blame for this mess lies with the mechanic and less so with the NCT centres.

If your 'mechanic' didn't see the same worn ball joint that was seen by 2 separate NCT inspectors on separate occasions….. then you need a better mechanic.

Unlikely as it was the rear axle brake pipe that failed, the suspension work was done on the front axle. They also failed to rectify the tyre advisory despite OP changing the tyres

Didn't spot that about the brake hose being on the rear. Either way, it's unsafe if kinked irrespective of whether that was picked up or not in the original NCT.

Also on the retest in Monaghan it points out to an unsafe modification to the front suspension. Any idea what that was? Plus worn wishbone bushings that weren't picked up first time. I would say the Kells NCT and the mechanic have both a lot to answer for.

As for the replaced tyres, it seems to be the practice that advisories are not amended on the cert since they do not require action i.e. the restest was not obliged to see if the tyres were changed because they weren't required to be changed. Just advised that they were old and almost worn to illegal levels.

tyres were also given an advisory for depth of thread less than 3mm - fair enough, they were not at the legal limit but pretty close

I've honestly never had an advisories stay on the NCT report after I rectified them and I've NCT'd hundreds of cars. I'm always changing tyres on Jap imports with no E marks

Fair enough, either way that had zero influence on the outcome in this scenario.

Both the OPs mechanic and the Kells NCT centre failed to spot the altered front suspension and worn front wishbone bushings. The mechanic also changed the wrong ball joint first time out. If he'd not done that then this thread probably would never have been created and the OP would have an NCT certificate. Hence my comment on maybe trying an alternative mechanic in the future.

Fair enough if the advisories were issued on a pass, but where the car has a retest, the advisories should be checked and removed where rectified. Otherwise it looks bad if selling the car and advisories are present when they shouldn't be.

No ball joint was changed, just a bolt. First time it failed for it he lifted it up and saw one ball joint fitted a bit incorrectly and assumed it was the one and he fixed it, it was less than 5 minutes of work and didn't even charge me but turns out it was the wrong one. Second time he fixed the correct one, again less than 5 minutes of work same scenario.

For illegal modification it was something cut off, shortened. I think bolt or some there, it passed last year. I remember it failed last year on suspension and my mate mechanic did that and it passed with that, its weird they failed for it this year.

It's weird they didn't check that if it was just above legal limit. What if it's below legal limit now since last test, it would be dangerous and unsafe to drive, should be checked?

How long have you owned the car op? It sounds like someone who has no idea what they are doing has been working on it

Balljoint loose means someone didn't fit it correctly in the past

Illegal modification is something relatively serious is modified in a poor way

The brake hose means someone was changing the rear brakes and twisted the caliper 360 degrees before putting it back on, this is very obvious and is quite dangerous depending on what it now rubs

Whoever was at your car should be nowhere near vehicles

Over a year. Last year it passed with no advisories here in Monaghan. Since then I have done no suspension work at all except wheel hub that I did myself. Modification was just shortened bolt. I know my own car. I wouldn't be mad if they pointed out all of the issues first test, but I fix what has to fixed when failed and then they bring up something the car didn't fail on previous time.

No brakes were done in rear, only thing was done in rear since last time was tires. I had car on lift to check for stuff couple times due to maintenance such as engine oil and transmission oil and would have noticed it some thing was actually wrong. It was between different mechanics that are reputable

They do not check them because they are not a fail, they only check fail items.

I have had cars with advisories remain or disappear without doing anything.

Doubt it would make an appreciable difference on resale, anyone buying it would look at the tyres, see they have since been replaced, they are not going to be looking for a discount for an old advisory

Like I said above I've tested hundreds of cars and the advisories always get removed. You just had a lazy or incompetent tester

I'm gonna post out complaint anyways, got form from NCT centre today. I just feel like this can't be happening, all issues should be pointed out first time when I go for test and fail. In that time span nothing else could have failed, I had fixed what they asked for to be fixed. Nothing else was touched except from a bolt and headlight adjustment and tires

Good luck with it, let us know how you get on.

    Surely will :)

I’ve heard a lot of similar stories locally cars failing retests just a few days later for completely different reasons at the same centre. My car was tested twice in Kells, and both times the only issue found was that one ball joint. The car wasn’t driven much between retests and was always driven carefully. I’ve even heard of people here supposedly “passing” by paying extra, but I didn’t want to go down that route since it was only meant to be a simple retest for that one ball joint. That’s why this Monaghan result makes no sense to me.

I will see where this complaint goes. I'll have it sent out tomorrow.
