    wow that was good price.

Well a small cash based independent mechanic might have only charged about €160 or so. Take from that what you want

Completely depends on the type of engine, type of service, and type of garage you bring it to

What did they do for 136 and what car

As has been said on here many times before everyones definition of a full service is different

I recently paid around the 300 mark for a service at my local indie, oil , air , cabin and full filter with a full check over for a 2014 diesel bmw 3 series

    I think that was reasonable

I pay €110 for oil+oil, air, fuel and pollen filter

    ...because I do it myself

Great savings to be had with just a little bit of know-how

For most cars the brake fluid is supposed to be changed every two years.

I wonder how many independent mechanics include that in a full service?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2, Paid Member Posts: 5,731 ✭✭✭SCOOP 64

Never had brake fluid change be it main dealer or indy for service over the years.

Getting an ID.4 serviced/inspected today. Needs two drop links replaced and brake fluid done. €850 at the main dealer. I think its very steep!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,962 ✭✭✭Hooked

Robbery. Drop links prob 20 quid each side plus labour of 2 hours max (call it 200), to include the brake fluid bleed/swap. And a service (oil and filters) another 250-300 MAX.

    Wheres the extra 350 going?

This is why I drive an 18 year old car and use a local 'old school' mechanic.

I once once got a quote to fit 2 failed injectors of 1800 quid.

Did the VCDS diagnostic myself - it needed a new wiring loom. 100 quid part. 100 quid labour.

    Some proper gangsters out there.

Main dealers charge astronomical hourly labour rates these days especially on EVs that require less parts and trips to a workshop.

All that modern diagnostic equipment, training to use it as well as the complementary coffee has to be paid for too.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,592 ✭✭✭✭User1998

You say that as if it's included in the price of a main dealer service. They charge extra for it. Any Indy will do it if you request it

That makes it worse 2 drop links and an inspection.

Think there is licensing costs for diagnostic software that dealers have to transfer to customers.

€200 for new oil and filter.

    €450 for the works.

    Diesel.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,592 ✭✭✭✭User1998

My mechanic charges about €35 cash for oil & filter labour😂

I don't disagree with you, but if the manufacturer's service schedule says the brake fluid is due to be changed, this should be part of the service, not an afterthought.

If it's not necessary, it shouldn't be on the service schedule.

It's not like brake pads that are discretionary based on the level of wear.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,592 ✭✭✭✭User1998

Meh, it's very easy to measure the quality of brake fluid. And I don't really think it's the responsibility of an independent mechanic to ensure you follow all of your service intervals. That responsibility would fall on the car owner.

Anyway, checking things like brake fluid and thread depth is usually part of a service anyway, so if something additional is needed the independent mechanic will usually let you know

A lot of car owners would have no idea what has to be done at a regular service. That is why they take the car to a qualified mechanic.

Any qualified mechanic should refer to the manufacturer's service schedule when they are servicing a car. Not all cars are the same.
