Two elephants in the room in Ireland regarding emissions

    Surface transport and agriculture.

    Aviation is of little significance.

    I'm partial to your abracadabra
I'm raptured by the joy of it all

Frankfurt airport dominates Germany in more of a way that Dublin airport dominates Ireland. Being an island is irrelevant.

being a island is absolutely relevant. The airport provides connectivity that can not be provided by roads or trains like they are in mainland Europe

ThThe non free flow major junctions on m50, airport eyt also increase emissions hugely... endless stopping and starting. The government could not cate less about emissions

Frankfurt is Lufthansa's hub for international cargo . . . supplying a country of 83m from around the world and basically through one airport. You cannot compare a country of 5m in such circumstances.

As soon as people realise that capitalism doesn't deserve the right to disturb your sleep when there are 16 other hours in the day……the better

As things stand Dublin gets away with quite a lot. Flights start very early every morning….some as early as 1AM.

I think the more relevant point is that, as already pointed out to you, Frankfurt closing between 11 and 7 is incredibly not true.

There are 36 landings before 7am tomorrow (earliest 0510) and 12 departures (earliest 0600), and on several days the earliest departure is at 0445.

It seems from various sources it has a curfew from 11 to 5am with exceptions for exceptional flights.

    It's 11PM to 5AM. Apologies.

But Lufthansa Cargo, in particular, wanted 24 hour opening.

I think the point is it's generally true. Not only that but a night time curfew is not uncommon.

    Incredible indeed.

Correct. the cap was not introduced to balance the countries airports activity but it is a knock-on effect of it

But as soon as it becomes the knock on effect, the intent was to sumit plans to expand, and lift the cap.

The Shannon airport runway was built in 1945. The space shuttle was the 80s so the runway wasn't built for it, also not sure they'd specifically build a civilian airport for the benefit of a US space exploration vehicle.

It wasn't a serious comment. I'm aware Shannon is older than the space shuttle program.
Thought I'd image they've upgrade the runway since the original. Dublin crosswind was originally grass.

AFAIK the reason for the length of the runway was because airplanes serving the transatlantic flights at the time needed more fuel, so were heavier and needed the longer runway. As you correctly say, it wasn't a negative at the time but you wouldn't do it today for certain

Yes it was for transatlantic flights. As was the location at the west edge of europe.
Not sure what you think they wouldn't do it now. Shannon is a particularly long runway. Dublin new runway is only slightly shorter. Extended range is being pushed all the time. Most new airports or major hubs today would have runways much longer than Shannon.

I highly doubt that there are too many people in Leinster who remember the nonsense with transatlantic flights and Shannon etc before Open Skies fondly. And pointing out that there are 9 airports on this island is a bit silly when the main one is the only one affected, that in turn being only airport that useful to a supermajority of Irish people and businesses.

Things may have changed since I lived in Dublin, but my memories of the M50 was that on Saturday afternoons or late nights it was perfectly fine. I only ever got stuck on it once when I had cause to use it on a weekday evening and didn't realise beforehand how crap it would be at that hour.

And that's without the Dublin Metro giving a large number of potential passengers a real alternative. Not all of course, but a lot.
