I know we're not in the main firing line for anything tomorrow but it's bucketing it down here in Laois too .

Same here (SW Laois), that band of rain crossing the country has really intensified since 6pm.

What a relief, eh? Just in time.
Been out today buying more power banks for our phones. It’s going to be a long winter, should buy shares in them at this rate.

Met Eireann's website says that they use a combination of AROME and Harmonie to do their short range forecasting. Harmonie has most of Mayo firmly in the red tomorrow afternoon, AROME not really going for the same intensity. But given the factors already mentioned like school runs, flooding, trees in leaf I am honestly amazed that they haven't gone red. They might yet but at this stage they're leaving it late. No point issuing it when the kids are in school tomorrow, causes even more chaos. The only thing I will say is that they are the professional forecasters and we are not so possibly they are not expecting it to be as bad, time will tell.

Sure you had dumb fùcks saying that in the middle of Eowyn.

Its pretty much all some can say.

"Storm swimmers" should just be left to claim their Darwin award aswell.

Nearly all the models now have the low in development off the northwest Mayo coast . As I was saying earlier about this storm, the shape can make a huge difference with lots of little kinks and waves and a possible twin center might show yet. The squalls with this will be serious well into Saturday.

ME have been proved wrong many times with their forecasts especially here

I do think that Red warnings will be issued tomorrow morning for Donegal, Mayo and Galway with more counties added to the orange warning. Met office UK have just also issued a amber for Derry, Tyrone and Fermanagh.

It is very late if they do issue one, again for the schools reason.

Looking at some of the models again, some young kids are going to experience 140kmph+ tomorrow afternoon in Gaoth Dobhair, Dunfanaghy, Fanad etc.

Dublin Airport TAF for the 24hrs to 17Z tomorrow (1800 local) forecasts gusts up to 45kts from 11am, then 50kts with a small chance of up to 55kts between 1500-1800. Likely similar speeds after that time which we'll see on their next update at midnight. Verrign from SEly to SWly as the day goes on.

(For those flying, the two main runways are alinged almost due E/W so with strong southerlies capacity gets reduced as they switch to the crosswind runway. Expect departures over the city and arrivals over NCD for a time mid afternoon. As these windspeeds will make for temporarily difficult or impossible takeoffs & landings - expect some disruption but probably not widespread cancellations)

Considering the Met office are often more reluctant to pull the higher end of warnings, it’s rare we have bordering counties like Cavan in yellow and Fermanagh in orange

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,614 ✭✭✭JanuarySnowstor

We all went to school in the 80s and 90s in these weather events and survived!! I'm sorry now but as many on here know if a red was warranted I would be the first to call for it! We are far from a red and it's worth noting that many schools leave it up to the parents in an Orange warning.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,060 ✭✭✭Dazler97

I think it is that and the wind field is quite big as well , I mean most of Saturday will remain blustery to gusty with the west having 50mph gusts in spots , I'd say most leaves will be off trees by Sunday

  • Site Banned Posts: 4,164 ✭✭✭Oíche Na Gaoithe Móire

I think you might call for red if the wind event effected Cork, badly. I don't think you're as interested in the rest of the country 😉

    Naturally enough.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 505 ✭✭✭Ros4Sam24

With the soil completely waterlogged in the west and trees in full leaf the possible impacts should ultimately be the deciding factor. To say we are far from red is simply not true for coastal regions

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,302 ✭✭✭.Donegal.

Dearg, you were calling for an orange warning for cork last night, said a few hours ago tomorrow would barely be a gale away from the far NW. Said the rain today would be more noteworthy than any wind then said today the rain was nothing and our grandparents would be roaring at us. I’ll miss this when boards shuts.

Not in the same league as Eowyn but still strong enough for the time of year to cause damage and bring down branches and trees being more or less in full leaf. Some power outages are inevitable I would say and Saturday remains quite a windy blustery day so might take time to get power back for some.

Strongest winds going through in about 3 or 4 hours I would think, It does look like the W /NW will have some of the strongest winds in the mid afternoon around school pick up time so a bit of a dilemma for forecasters. I think should be considered at least a high end Orange and with the Red Marine Warning those near the coast should treat it as Red.

Wind following the cold front crossing the country tomorrow, under a colder airmass after the cold front so introducing much cooler fresher air. Could be in the high teens and muggy on Fri and around 12 or 13C on Sat and feeling cooler in the wind. Parameters increasing for some thunderstorms activity tomorrow night ,more so along Atlantic coastal areas and maybe moving a bit inland but isolated in nature.

    image.png

    Tomorrow

Storm Amy will bring heavy rain and very windy or stormy conditions tomorrow. There will be strong to gale force south to southwest winds, veering westerly, along with severe and damaging gusts. Winds will increase to storm or violent storm force in western and northwestern coastal areas at times during the afternoon and evening. Rain will extend across the country from the southwest during the morning and will be heavy at times, possibly causing localised flooding. The rain will gradually clear eastwards through the afternoon and will be followed by scattered showers and some sunny spells. Highest temperatures of 16 to 19 degrees.

Tongue in cheek comment this afternoon. The rain was torrential today in Cork and anyone living here will confirm that it was at orange levels!! This storm just doesn't look much to me. My opinion and perhaps biased by my location

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 950 ✭✭✭Robwindstorm

I suppose to put a lighthearted view on things, the 80s and 90s weather summary would probably read :

    TODAY: very wet and windy

    TOMORROW: wet and very windy

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 48 basquete99

No update so from MET Eireann tonight then? I guess they aren't even updating the orange warnings to more counties. Seems reckless, most people ignore yellow warnings

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,614 ✭✭✭JanuarySnowstor

Yep and it would be accurate!!

There's no doubting things are upgrading a little as the storm is that bit closer to our shores. I like the ecm. Also someone mentioned soggy ground, trees in full leaf which is of course a valid comment...

I do think its important to preserve red warnings for serious events and not to overuse them. Over using reds will lead to complacency when a proper storm hits

Any ideas what Lahinch weather might do tomorrow?

Plastic Sheeting on the news just now said the marine warnings extend 10km inland. Probably be mentioned on the 9,30 forecast.

Whats the timeline for this, what time will it hit Ireland (Mayo) how long can we expect it to last ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 505 ✭✭✭Ros4Sam24

A bit of IMBYism here but surprised Roscommon isn’t orange. Latest Harmonie and Arome (witch Met Eireann use )are >110kmh

MET Eireann mostly silence tonight makes no sense. This storm is gonna hard during peak traffic in some areas.
