Struggling to Relocate to Waterford – School Places and Rental Barriers

Hello everyone, I’m reaching out because I’m facing a very stressful housing and schooling situation.

I’m a parent of five children, currently living in County Dublin. Due to the high cost of rent here, we made the decision some time ago to relocate to Waterford. I enrolled all five children in schools there, and we were in the process of purchasing a home. Unfortunately, the sale fell through at the end of last August, and we’ve since been actively searching for a rental property in Waterford.

However, it’s been extremely difficult. Most estate agents won’t consider us for three-bedroom properties, and four-bedroom homes are both rare and often go unanswered. I received a termination of tenancy notice in January, so we urgently need to move.

At the moment, my children are not attending school. If I finalize their transfer to the Waterford schools, they won’t be able to attend in person until we move—but they may receive homework remotely. On the other hand, if I re-enroll them in schools here in Dublin, we risk losing their places in Waterford, which is where we still intend to move for both financial and personal reasons. I’m unsure whether we’d be able to secure those places again if we relocate in the coming months.

I’ve contacted Tusla regarding the school attendance issue and am currently waiting to hear back. For now, I’ve only been offered school places in Dublin for two of my five children, the other three can't get the place in the school they went to.

Has anyone experienced a similar situation? I’d really appreciate any advice or insights.
