Where are all the tasty and juicy oranges gone? Why is there citrus produce from South Africa in our supermarkets at this time of year?

Time of year. Spain, for example, harvests oranges from October to February.

They’re seasonal here, that’s why you’re mostly seeing South African ones at the moment. Spanish and Mediterranean oranges usually come into the shops from late autumn through winter, roughly October to February. Outside of that window, supermarkets import from places like South Africa or sometimes Egypt to keep the shelves stocked year-round.

The downside is they’re often not as sweet or juicy as the European ones we’re used to in winter.

I am actually enjoying the 'freshly squeezed' bottles of juice. Good value given how many oranges are needed to make up liter size. But I realise the shelf life is short and never as good Vit C content as straight from fruit.
