Importing A Classic

Hi there,

I know there are a few threads covering this but the rules seem to change often and there are some horror stories

Ill be very exact,I'm looking at importing a 1992 Mk1 Mx5 from UK.

My question is outside of the flat rate of 200 do I have to pay an extra taxes or charges?

Does it complicate things that the car was imported from Japan to UK about 15 years previous?

Any help greatly appreciated.

€200 VRT, 23% VAT on purchase price. No duty. Going from Japan to UK makes no difference*.

*Assuming the V5 has a special note for the 1992 registration date in Japan. If it doesn't, your vintage status will be based off the first UK registration date.

Wow so I'd still be getting rode for the 23% tax even on vintage? They don't make it easy to have interesting cars in this country!

Well the VAT is down to the UK leaving the EU, not sure I'd apportion much blame to our government for that. You also get 56 a year road tax - think vintage owners are pretty well sorted here to be honest .
