Mod - Splitting this off into a new thread.

    Welcome to the forum!

So you cannot apply for a firearms certificate until you are 16, between 14 and 16 you could apply for a firearms training certificate but that needs to be accompanied by a firearms certificate holder who is 18 or older.

I'd suggest you get your paperwork in order so you can hand it in when you are 16, maybe contact your local station to talk to the Firearms Officer and see can you get your security inspected by the crime prevention officer in advance of applying to speed up the process somewhat.

Also since you mentioned target shooting are you currently or are you planning to be a member of a range, since that is the only way you can licence a firearm for target shooting?

Never forget, the end goal is zero firearms of any type.

S.I. No. 187/1972 - Firearms (Temporary Custody) Order - Firearms seized

S.I. No. 21/2008 - Firearms (Restricted Firearms and Ammunition) Order 2008 - Firearm types restricted

Criminal Justice (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2009 - Firearms banned & grandfathered

S.I. No. 420/2019 - Magazine ban, ammo storage & transport restricted

Criminal Justice (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 2023 - 2023 Firearm Ban (retroactive to 8 years prior)

You need to know what type of target shooting you want to start in. Shotgun, rifle, or handgun. As said above to shoot targets you need to be in a club that has target ranges, not all ranges have. I'm target shooting for many years now, started with a semi automatic 22ir rifle in the Gallery type of shooting, mainly standing position. Gone too old for now and now shoot at a bench with a bolt action rifle.

I have 2 benchrest rifles, both second hand for the different type of shooting I do. One cost €150 and the other was €1000. So you can see it can be cheap enough to start out. But at the same time it can get expensive. Add to this range fees and any equipment you'll need, plus transport to the range.
