Losing earlier than usual at RG was a blessing in disguise I think. Gave her more time to prepare on grass, and look at the result. I'm sure she'd have taken winning Wimbledon over another RG at the beginning of the year.

Womens final is a waste of money to be honest, rarely get a decent match.

    6-0, 6-0, disgraceful stuff.

    That was horrible to watch

    That’s why I don’t watch women’s tennis

Poor Anisimova this is a tough watch, I know she has struggled with her mental health, I hope she comes back stronger.

I always remember Novotna (RIP) in the 1993 final, she came back to win Wimbledon in 1998.

I wonder who is commentating on the men's final this year....hopefully not that muppet Andrew Castle, I did enjoy how Agassi dealt with him ha

Etiquette? £2.5M and Wimbledon trophy? I'd say sorry afterwards.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 271 ✭✭AugustRain

theres a chance of her totally losing it if someone touches her.

Yes, Agassi really showed him up. Was funny when Agassi was trying to make a point about the game and Castle kept interrupting him to talk about who was in the Royal box and Agassi more or less told him to shut up. I thought he was an excellent commentator.

That was brutal from Swiatek. A Swiatek vs Sabalenka final would surely be better.

I'd argue it's far more enjoyable than the mens game at the moment.

The mens game has 2 players a country mile ahead of everyone else and there doesn't look to be anyone coming along to challenge them.

5 different grand slam winners in a row in the womens game and all of them good players who have been in multiple grand slam finals.

Think I'll take an epic 5 set final between the two clear best player's and a potential repeat of that a month later over that tbh.

It's looked to me like the occasion got to Anisimova. She made so many great winners under pressure in the semis and wasnt sucked in by Sabalenka's nonsense mind games. Such a shame she completely tightened up for the final.

1 great match across a tournament where it's been pretty obvious who was going to meet in the final isn't great in my opinion, it's nice to have a bit of variety in who meets in finals, hopefully we don't get another final between the 2 of them at the US open.Potentially this being a theme for the next few years isn't something to look forward to imo as they look to be miles in front of the other players of their era.

I dunno I think you're in the minority there. Tennis needs stars, that's what sells tickets and gets people watching. People want to see rivalries between the very best players over a number of years, not 8 different slam finalists in a season. Maybe the purists get off on that but everyone wants to see the likes of Djokovic, Federer, Nadal, Serena on the women's side. You're kidding yourself if you think women's tennis is in a healthy place after that today.

But womens tennis does have stars, just it also has a bit of variety to go with it recently.

I'd argue that's what's best for the sport overall, I think a bit of variety along with star players makes things more interesting.

If there were bad players winning grand slams then it would be a problem but all the recent winners of the womens grand slams have been quality players who've been to multiple finals.

Ridiculous stuff - should have held her second service game then never looked like winning a game again.

you do wonder how it would have gone if she didn't go out and immediately give up 3 break points first game.

The one thing that annoys me about the ladies game, is there's so much commentary about mental health issues.

As soon as a player is losing, there's a "mental health issue" . I was "delighted" Ons was knocked out early as the last two finals the commentary was all about her struggles and mental health.....the whole conversation was repeated today.

I do get pressure and mental health is a big thing and I'm not knocking it.... however I don't understand why you'd do something that makes you absolutely miserable.

When you compare the likes of alcaraz, he's like a puppy on court. Tennis is a joy to watch when he's playing.

There's no fun in watching someone break emotionally. Bring disappointed and maybe a bit angry is understandable but the nature of the game is someone will lose.

    Different mindsets.

Players like Alcaraz and Nadal, can cope with pressure, if anything it brings out the best in them.

All great sportspeople thrive under pressure, its a catalyst for them, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Ronaldo, Djokovic, etc.

I dont really understand how these female players can be so flaky under the slightest bit of pressure.

Its funny what the mind can do to the body, fear is the mindkiller.

Muscles just lock up, some players find it hard to breathe under pressure.

However I don't understand why you'd do something that makes you absolutely miserable.

Its a job, a very well paying one, and most days they are winning, its just a few big matches a year where the nerves comes to the fore.

Men's tennis has been in a shocking state for the last 7/8 years; Federer and Nadal both declining were still Djokovic's main threats before they retired, a forty year old Federer on one leg got to the quarter finals at Wimbledon! Nadal won the AO, his least favourite slam after more than 6 months out injured. Djokovic basically had two or 3 years with no competition apart from Covid until Alcaraz arrived. The likes of Medvedev, Tsitsipas, Zverev have consistently shown they are not up to standard. The main threat to Alcaraz and Sinner is a clearly declining Djokovic, who is a long way off his peak and there doesn't really seem to be anyone else to challenge them, hopefully a few will emerge over the next few years, even when the big 3 dominated, we still had the likes of Murray, Wawrinka, Del Porto, and Cilic to keep them honest, there's no one like them at the moment. Arguably the depth is higher than ever, as in the top 100 is as strong as ever, but the top 10 Is probably as weak as it's ever been.

The women's game is in a healthier state, the depth has never been as strong, but, the top players are inconsistent, whereas in the past there was always a dominant player like Serena, Venus, Steffi, or Martina, there isn't anymore, Sabalenka and Swiatek ( I know she's had a poor year until Wimbledon) are the most consistent and probably the two best players, but, Sabalenka seems to choke at the latter stages of slams. At the moment, yesterday's final apart, the women's game is generally more entertaining than the men's game, which ( bar Alcaraz v Sinner) has become boringly predictable.

Alcaraz takes second set point..first set 6-4 insane shot to win it!

What's with all the what look like 'guardsmen' standing in front of the crowd during breaks?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,540 ✭✭✭Princess Calla

    Security to protect the players.

A female player was stabbed by a deranged fan of her opponent a "few" years ago.

Sinner breaks Alcarazs opening service game of second set!
