what a beautiful day for a game of golf good company @Snackbox20 @ciano316 , and lovely track in excellent condition

My golf is not were il like it to be , trying to change a few thing can see a bit of light at the end of the tunnel 🤔not much to say about my round , @Ciano35 struggle of the tee a bit , his iron play is very good a good round coming @Snackbox20 has come a long way since the last time I played with him , he drove the ball very well and his pitching and putting was top class a bit unluck not to be in the prizes

Congrats to all the winner , till the next time

Played very poorly on the day. But enjoyed it nonetheless.

Great to play in the sunshine. Was very tired after the round and legs were sore, everyone in the clubhouse seemed wrecked!

Enjoyed the craic, and delighted for Bobster and the winners. Some great shooting today with 40pts only good enough for 5th position!

My 29pts was very disappointing and I felt like I played the worst i could have… but looking back at the last time we played the curragh I was 12 strokes worse. I suppose I should take some solace in knowing that my golf level has risen so much in 10 years.

Watch out, because next time we play the curragh I'm going 12 shots better again!

Really enjoyable round with @get2thechoppa and @ThecHamp26 on a really interesting course. Get2 is a great golfer and so knowledgeable about the game. Champ did some fantastic driving of the ball but round was cut short unfortunately.

I had a mixed round, with driver acting mostly well behaved, but I couldn't hit an iron to save my life. Happy to be out again after practically no golf last year, with boards the only thing keeping me playing. Tried playing without focusing on scoring but happy still to break 30 points.

The course was excellent and I'd definitely play it again given the chance. Well done to the winners!!

Great day out with @Macker1 and @bakerbhoy on Saturday. What should have taken me 1:45 hours of a trip was 2:20 with the traffic so I wasn’t late but rushing a small bit before teeing off. The course looked fantastic from the first tee and was very unusual to see golfers on various holes making their way around!!
@bakerbhoy had an excellent front 9 and honestly his chipping / scrambling is where I’d like to get to some day it’s really impressive and looks effortless at times. @Macker1 played well aswell on the day , the highlight being a birdie on 10 ( I think ) and bar a few errant shots was on for a great score aswell.
Last time we played here it’s one of the few courses I wasn’t a massive fan of at the time but to be fair the fairways were the best I’ve played off all year and the greens were great aswell , only a bit slower than what was billed beforehand. There is a great mix of shorter par 4’s to the epic 17th a beast of a par 4 probably my favourite hole on the day. I will admit I don’t like the sheep fencing that’s all around the course it’s just too easy to get close to it with a bad bounce or errant shot and the hole is gone for you. That’s not an excuse for my score though , I started great with a Par but lost my drive on the 2nd and didn’t play a provo !! Kept the head up and tried a safe iron for the 3rd but got a big bounce right and that’s kind of how my whole day went… we had a big wait on the next tee box and twice more at tee boxes during the round 5-10 minutes each time. It felt like a slow round but at 4:40 it was better than expected going around. I’ve attatched a picture of 1 crazy spot I landed on 1 of the par 5’s had to take an unplayable drop but got up and down!!

    IMG_9742.jpeg

Overall the day was really enjoyable with my playing partners and the condition of the course but I was expecting a lot better with recent form. I am really under pressure now to make that jug team so mabye a lot more practice and a visit to @bakerbhoy ’s short game clinic would give me a leg up on the table!
Massive congrats to @bobster453 on a great score well played and all the other prize winners.

Great day out with the Boards crew again, this time playing with @scotty_golf9 and @kev_s88 both of whom I had played with before and knew as nice lads. @kev_s88 had been riding high in the GOTY standings for a number of rounds and @scotty_golf9 can hit the ball a mile so was a little worried that my golf wouldn't stand up to the test. Arrived with about 30 minutes to spare, got a few putts in on what turned out to be the chipping green 🙄 and hit a 7 iron a few times to warm up. Most of the groups were already on their way at this point - I normally head out earlier but home life meant it suited this time to leave as late as possible. @kev_s88 had been at a wedding the night before and as he said himself as an after's guest he started late but went late into the night. He wasn't expecting a huge amount from himself and unfortunately that's the way it turned out with a round far off the consistency he's shown all year in GOTY. Still, no damage done and I'm sure in future rounds he'll be back to his best. Was great company on the way round despite the hangover but I think he was a little relieved when it was all over! @scotty_golf9 is a great golfer who by all accounts has been playing well in his club team. He had actually played a few recent rounds in the Curragh ahead of beating the Curragh team in the Barton Cup (might have the cup wrong) and so he was to be our guide on the way round - although he had won on the 15th so we were on our own from there 😁. Played some super golf at times on the day - his driving when on point is unreal, but was a little too inconsistent on the day. Highlight was the longest drive on 18 when he boomed one down the fairway just to the top of the downhill approaching the green to take first place with only one group to play. Unfortunately for him @Kiith was in that final group and we were putting when we saw one land maybe a yard past @scotty_golf9 and take the downslope to run out a well deserved winner.

As for myself - my golf had been shocking for the last couple of months. As I've written about on here before this feels a little like a make or break year - sick of being a +20 handicapper and so this winter put in a bit of work to try and get myself ready for the golf season. Thought I'd cracked it when I went out in round 1 in Jameson and shot 41 points and honestly thought that I'd be sub 20 in about a month or two if I put a number of rounds in - like a fool had my spreadsheets done up with projected scores 😒. Since then my golf has been shocking, so much so that about three or four weeks ago I decided I was wasting my time just playing in Saturday/Sunday comps in my own club and eeking out 20 something points and so I decided to stop playing on the course and instead do some regular range practice instead to try and improve my consistency of strike which I feel is my biggest problem. Of course what I actually did then was sit on my arse and not pick up a club for three weeks. The approaching Boards trip to the Curragh plus a work golf outing last week in Carton House focused the mind and so about 10 days ago I finally got off the couch and went to the range and to the chipping/putting area in my club - but in fairness went nearly every day. And so it was that I was a little more confident than I probably deserved to be when I arrived at the first tee. Hacked my way up the first par 5 on in 4 and then sank a lovely maybe 10 foot well paced putt for a par - nice start. Two scratches on the front 9 were balanced with a number of three pointers given the number of shots I had so I turned with 19 points. Putting and chipping were good all day, maybe the practice was starting to pay off and although I had a few errant drives they were generally in play. What I was most pleased about was the improved consistency in strike of my approach shots - most of my misses were long which is unheard of for me. I wasn't too worried if I was left or right of target - I just wanted to strike to be decent and the fact that I was going long rather than short means something is going better. Back 9 in 21 points for a total of 40 and 5th place.

Really enjoyed the course, thought it was sometimes almost links like with the run on some of the holes - made for some interesting shots. Loved some of the holes and would like another crack at it in the future. There was a bit of waiting on tee's as @Kiith explained there was another society out in front of us - but it never got so slow that it was annoying and in the end it was about a 4h40 round. In the beautiful weather I wasn't complaining. Lovely bit of grub back in the clubhouse - the photos and history of the place were a great addition.

Congratulations to @bobster453 @token56 and @boccy23 in the winners enclosure - great scoring. Well done to @Alanm for the NTP and @FixdePitchmark for Gross. Well done and huge thanks to @Kiith for that longest drive - was great to witness it even if it broke @scotty_golf9 's heart!

Thanks also to @Kiith for offering to sort out the scoring into Golf Ireland - looking forward to 0.7 coming off my handicap at last - as JFK said "Every Accomplishment starts with the decision to try", perhaps a better one for me and my handicap is Confucius "It does not matter how slowly you go as long as you do not stop" - that's me told!

It is amazing really that golf is played their since then. I really love the place – we don’t have too many courses in Ireland that are that style – Heathland I guess, uncultivated like "meself".

A few technical issues to start – but we were underway and again a super 3 ball partners, of Break80 and awec. The two lads are sound and like their peaceful round , I was there to sing to the sheep.

The 3 balls were a joy , plenty of time to focus on your shot and all others – no hanging around on greens. Great weather , good golf and an amazing course – what a day served up.

I’ve been around a good while with BGS and at times felt it was near the end of the road – but you have a day like that on a course you may not play otherwise – you know they are the days that bring you back.

Long story – but my golf time is very limited at present , so when I get out, I really do appreciate it more – the views , the centre line on fairway , the different cuts on the first cut , the detail – the course has come on a long way. The solid mature trees , the stunning course stuck in the wild heathland. It is as close as you get to links golf – when not links.

We all played well enough on front – a few bad drives , but besides that some great golf , one thing – the greens were a good bit slower than the high risen practice area – and we struggled to convince our minds and arms, to hit them on way up and don’t be over afraid on the way down.

I have played with break80 a good bit over the years – but not too much over last 18 months. I was very impressed with his improved length off tee – his general short game and always solid flat stick. I genuinely think on the right day on the right course, the break80 could be on. Smart man - but I don't think he is picking his sub 80 courses smart.

Awec is a solid guy – and his game is improving all the time – watch out for him , he could shoot the lights out soon – If he did say he may have already had that moment at his home club this season. But his general set up , swing , short game improved massively. Maybe a bit too afraid of the putts at times - but that will come.

Myself – I’m not playing amazing golf – but just getting ball around course in whatever way I can – driving well, but rest a bit of a bluff if truth be told. No range time, no working on game. Just playing the way I can play on the day. But golf is a mystery – sometimes , the harder you try , the worse you score. I'm not trying , but scoring well - odd.

Sorry I had to hit the road early – meeting one of my longest friends in town that evening, for a comedy night (was a long night and day) . Might see all in Seapoint.

By the way – I know the world changes, the forum changes – but the posting on the rounds is down a bit. Sad – as a USP and a much valued aspect of the society. Some great posts above.

Bobster – savage score – (again)

I’ll leave you Bobster on one of Kildare’s most famous son after you “ I’m an Ordinary man , nothing special nothing grand, I’ve had to work for everything I own” “I never asked for a lot , I was happy with what I got , Enough to keep my family and my home”

I don't hate many things in life, apart from that gowk in that "yeeuuugggghhhh, broke down on the side of the road "gorges a mini cheesecake" forgot to fill it with petrol" advert 🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄, and just about to push Post Comment and just like prayer at bedtime the phone screen fades to black with a slender white light and kaput, battery dies. So attempt #2, 52% remaining and peace while another post midsomer shower falls.

Really enjoyed the Curragh golf course Saturday and will definitely play it again, it can be quite punishable in many places with sheep fencing and so many OB areas, but with the scorcher of a day the fairways held very firmly and the greens were a challenge. A strange one during my round on the 4th my ball plugged in the first cut after my tee shot, strange to see that in the middle of June after such a dry spell.

After getting in some practice putts on the long tabletop like putting green there was a very fast run on them, this was different on the main greens as they played slower. A lovely opening hole par 5 got things under way, in front of most of my boards brethren, thwacked my drive firmly and safe down the left hand side of fairway, I had a couple of tee shots in front of some fellow golfers as there was some waiting on a number of the tee boxes due to 3 ball groupings and other societies out ahead of us. Didn't mind if all, great to be out on such a peach of a summers day.

I was in a great 3 ball with @LinoRichie who I hadn't being paired up with in a while and along with @ciano15 who I recently played with in Portumna, it was a pleasure to play with you out there and thank you so much for a great round, great craic and banter all the way from 1 to 18. @ciano15 can really launch the ball and only for a left pull took the regulation out of play to nearly take the LD, there were a number of shots that didn't click, but he can definitely and will put in serious scores soon.

As @LinoRichie eluded to in his summary of the day, there were some changes that he made to his game and he was very unlucky on times where he has hampered by the ball landing near or behind the fencing. He has an excellent short game though, plays some very clever and deft chips on to the greens, definitely showed me how it was done on the very short par 3 16 😁.

I was very happy how my round was going, my golf game over the last 2 months has been like a trawler on deadliest catch, all over the place, head and heart were not working together and Saturday with excellent company got the game back into gear, hugely appreciated lads 👍👍👍👍. The only fluff in my game and I was warned by course member @Kiith that the 17th is a great par 4 but there is a reason why it's index 1, left drive and 3 very bad chips to get back into fairway left me hitting a 7 with 2 shots and an axe wound on the card. Going to the 18th needing a bogey would have given me a 42, a short putt from the fringe left a tap in 6 for 1 and with 22 front and 19 back I was really happy with a 41 but thinking I was still mid 35s. When I got back to the car park, I was met by my co-pilot @get2thechoppa who was delighted with the course and his game said "holy s#£t J, could be up there 🤔" when I went into the clubhouse, @RoadRunner who was looking after the admin, went oooh great score, @boccy23 what did you shoot? "Nowhere close boy!!!!" The winner was 42, but it was pgatour close, @bobster453 took the W with the winning 42, @token56 had same score but the last 3 holes count back got him the 2nd place and on the crest of his county's Munster title victory and a smile as wide as Garfield getting a tour of Carolls lasagne house after the shock result of Limerick exiting the championship at the hands of the Dubs, @boccy23 got the 3rd place spot with a better back nine for a great 41. I was delighted with the 41 and some much needed Jug points and a clamber up the table.

Great food and as always great craic with the fellow golfers in the clubhouse.

Congratulations also to @Kiith for LD, @Alanm nearest to pin and to @FixdePitchmark for a great best gross prize. It's only now with 41% remaining that I mentioned about the strange phenomenon of the club having no water earlier in the day, a toilet on the 9th was the nearest facility or the nearest village was for longer consultations, but didn't have any issues with that thankfully, a huge thank you must go as always to captain @Kiith and the ever hard working committee for sorting out the groupings and the scores on the club system that day. I will definitely play the course again.

So much needed Jug points secured and need to keep the momentum going for Fermoy and Seapoint before Captain's.

Thanks again to the lads for a great round of golf and to the lads in the groups ahead and behind for the laughs in between tee shots when there was the traffic jam.

    Till Fermoy

    As @FixdePitchmark said

"By the way – I know the world changes, the forum changes – but the posting on the rounds is down a bit. Sad – as a USP and a much valued aspect of the society."

Totally concur, as an online golf society..possibly unique in the world..we really should do better.

Reading the post round posts is always good craic. The good, the bad and the ugly.

And pics..lots of pics..i am defo in the could do better category on this one.

It is a bit surprising just how hilly the Curragh is, I had pictured it as being fairly flat. The course itself has a good mature nature to it, ye ca tell it has been there for ages. Great fairways, well kept trees, the only thing I wasn't a fan of was the random tufts of heavy rough around the fairways, I guess they are a replacement to fairway bunkers but they are just such a lottery when you go into them.

Played with @FixdePitchmark and @Break80 , two gents, great laughs the whole way around. Fix hits the ball like a bullet off the tee and his iron shots are great to watch, he really is a great ball striker. He was very consistent on Saturday and came away with a very respectable points total.

Break80 was great off the tee and started very well but a few wayward shots on the back 9 ended up damaging his score. I think he found every one of those heavy rough tufts that I mentioned earlier.

It wasn't my best day out, I really need to do some work with my putter it's costing me points every week now. The chat of fast greens got into my head, personally I didn't find them that fast, probably slower than my home course, but I couldn't bring myself to hit the ball hard enough all day so I was a bit all over the place.

I finished with 29 points and it was a battle to get those 29, a par on the index 1 17th was probably my hole of the day.

Well done to @bobster453 on the win, I knew he'd played well when I saw him walk into the club house with a big happy head on him.

See yous all in Fermoy hopefully!

I've missed the last few outings with the society due to inter club commitments so I had been really looking forward this round on a course that has always interested me. My standard of golf this year has been pretty poor and I've gained 3 shots back since January as a result but have been feeling like things have started to turn around recently. This was going to be the first real test of that.

I was playing with @weapon of grass destruction and @charlieIRL, two gents I've spoken to before but don't think I've actually played with. They were fantastic company of course with weapons coming out with some sayings that I've never heard before and probably can't be repeated here 😄

Weapons games was very solid throughout, when he finds the fairway he is often making par but on this day had a couple of putts that just didn't break his way which could have easily added another 4 or more points to his round. Charlie struggled a bit off the tee to begin with which didn't give him the best start but once he got going started to show his real game. Also got a bit unlucky with some drives and the pace of the greens a bit but definitely has the game for a big round when everything clicks.

I had been really struggling with my driving the past few months but found it again in the past few weeks and when I saw the tee box on the opening hole I was equally delighted and terrified. Thankfully I absolutely smashed it carrying all the downhill and according to my Garmin it rolled out to 350 yards. Hit an 8 iron to the front of the green and 2 putt for an opening birdie. Followed this up with a mixed next few holes, par, bogey, double. The bogey on 3 was very poor short game after another great drive and the double on the par 3 4th hole, a poor iron pushed a bit right into the heavy stuff and couldn't make it to the green with my second. I managed to steady the ship here in closing out the front 9 had, 1 par, 2 more birdies and 2 bogeys to be 2 over in total. Very happy with how I was playing, driving the ball fantastically and when you make 3 birdies in 9 holes you can't be disappointed just a pity about some of the sloppy bogeys and the double.

Started the back 9 well again with 2 pars, 1 bogey but then had what feels now like a customary 3 hole blip, lost drive on the 13th, bogey 14 and another lost drive on 15. I feel like both 13 and 15 were unlucky in different ways, on 13 I just pushed it slightly right and the OB came into play. After seeing the way the hole slops downhill this could have been another great opportunity for birdie, definitely par had I got my drive away properly. On 15 I hit what I thought was a great drive but it started a bit too right and didn't come back enough. Fairly surely it landed in the thick rough and just couldn't find it. Felt fairly penalising have such thick grass so close to the fairway but if playing both of these holes again I would be picking different lines off the tee. I knew I needed a good finish to still have a chance of winning so went out with a positive mindset planning to finish with all pars. The index 18, 16th was a good way to start and a relatively straightforward par here. The 17th, index 1, I needed a good drive but was struggling physically at this point with the heat for sure. I didn't actually see where my drive went but found it in the rough on the left and still 180 to the green. Had a feeling it was a flyer and a really well struck 7 iron actually went a bit long to the back of the green but still left me putting. Got my 2 putt for a very satisfying par. The 18th was the long drive hole and torn between trying to smash my drive and play it relatively conservatively I ended up doing something in between and pushed it slightly right again. Still a good distance down but close to a tree and a very awkward stance hitting my 2nd shot. I knew I just needed to advance it towards the green and pitched a wedge out but got lucky as it caught the downslope before the green which carried it towards the front edge. Managed to get up and down and close out for a par, par, par finish which was again very satisfying.

I was hoping I had done enough to get the win and handing my card in I was told to place it in the pile when I realised it was very close. Took a few minutes to figure out that I had lost on count back but well done @bobster453, a great round and a well deserved win. Congratulations to everyone else who took a prize and @boccy23 on being the mid season leader and to @Kiith on a organising another great day. Second time getting a 2nd place, hopefully can manage a win this year and it will probably be needed to make the Jug team as I'm still a long way off. But hopefully still enough time to creep into the top 10.

Late getting my report up (sorry @FixdePitchmark!). Living within 30 mins of the Curragh and having walked it loads of times, this was my first time playing the course. It won't be the last. Really enjoyed the variations in terms of elevated tees or greens, the rolling almost links like fairways, small & large greens and the visuals that applied either side of the road.

I had the pleasure of playing with 2 regular partners @bobster453 and @Concerned2 although Bob seemed upset to be playing with me! 😁 A bit delayed due to traffic on the M7 which was annoying as I could have come 4 different ways to avoid any extra stress. There was some confusion over entry on the app and so I rushed off to clubhouse and entered on the Computer. Again, some seemed to have difficulty there, but Bob put me right! Good craic was had here between Bob and Fix with Fix musically pointing out to us that he indeed just an Ordinary Man!

The first is a really tremendous (to quote someone) visage and teed it up nice and high for a draw - which never drew and left me under the trees. A few hacks later, an unfortunate bounce and I had an 8-footer for a point. Made it, not the best start but the putt gave me a bit of momentum. Excellent drive on the second, 9-i to elevated green and a 2 putt made up for the 1st. Parred the 3rd with an up and down and was going well. Theme of the day was generally good off the tee with a few issues over unfortunate positioning of trees (not my ball!) leaving me scrambling around the greens for par. The 8th is a lovely hole and all 3 of us piped our drives down the hill. Both Bob and I were long left. he used his wrists on a short pitch to perfection and dropped it dead on the green to a foot for his par. I had a poor first putt but nailed the second from 15 feet for a par as well.

This was also when my golf game gets puts into perspective. Bob said there was ball that came from our left. Turned out to be @RoadRunner who bombed off the 10th tee onto the side of the 9th tee box in heavy rough clocked out by pine trees. He pitched towards the front of the green which was the only shot open from heavy rough and executed it perfectly. Chance of a par. After teeing off 9, looked over to see Roadrunner pitch in for a birdie! Some day my golf may exist on the same stratosphere as that!!

Turned with 20 points and Bob said to me 44 strokes. He had 40 strokes so knew he had 24 points. This weirdly took any pressure off as I said he will be consistent enough not to worry where I can get to. 6 points on next 3 holes and then the Index 2 Par 5 from the top of the hill. An intimidating tee shot, not my best but in play. 3-w from the rough went too straight towards the OB on the right but thankfully the camber of the fairway brought it back into the middle of the fairway. An 8-i long and left and I had an up and down for 4 points. Good pitch to 6 feet and drained the putt. Nice!

Incidentally when waiting on the green looked back up the fairway and saw @spacecoyote carve his second with a wood straight towards the OB as well. It clattered into the fence and rolled back into the fairway same as mine. Larger room for error that side - Bob was not so lucky with the gorse on the left but a super 3-w from 250+ and 2 putts gave him 2 points.

The short par 3 14th was an error. Said to play close to the number at 170 yards and hot a 7-i which carried the green and OB with the sheep. Went back for a 9-i and hit to 15 feet for 2 putts and a point to keep the score going. Parred 15 and 16, 2 points on 17 - then Bob decided to choose that moment to inform me that we were level at 39 points standing on the 18th tee. I knew I had a better back 9. So stood up to rip one and topped it 60 yards in front of me. Hot a good hybrid and pitched to the safe part of the green and made a 5 to finish with 41. As Bob mentioned above, he held his nerve and sunk the putt. Well done Bob! Funny how quiet he got lining up that putt. Less banter and more focus when winning was on the line.

@Concerned2 didn't have his best day off the tee and struggled to score after that. Highlight was a great drive on the last which was up to where the marker was at the time. Massive drive from @Kiith to get over the hill.

Enjoyed the banter with @Break80 and Bob after when we informed him of subcommittee rulings about on course practice etc. to try and deduct some points. No joy, so congrats to Bob. Spoke with @token56 as well who scored a brilliant 42 as well. Super score. Was probably a bit brutal with @Snackbox20! Sorry SnackBox, all part of the craic on the day.

Thanks again to Captain @Kiith for a super venue. As you can see from the above, the Society is really about all the characters you interact with on the day and friends you make and see once a month for 8 days of the year and last the golf. Life is far more than a number on the card at the end of any 18 holes.

Thanks to all. Should see you all again in Fermoy (depends on the outcome of the first day of Captains prize).

Well another great outing in the books. Much thanks to @Kiith and all the lads on the committee for all their hard work throughout the weeks.

BBiG congrats to @bobster453 on a great win. And all the lads getting prizes, most scores would have won any other week.

I had the pleasure of playing with @token56 and @charlieIRL. Two absolute gents. We had a good laugh which to me is what it's all about if your playing good golf then it's a bonus.

Cathal's driver deserted him for the first 4 holes which hurt him. The little dribbler off the first and his comments had everyone on the first tee in stitches laughing. As soon as he got in his stride he was playing some really nice golf. My self and him had a couple ofnear miss on the 17th with a couple of missiles just missing us. Tony was on fire from the first tee and was unlucky not to start with an Eagle. His driving was definitely the highlight, he was hitting bombs all day and the short game wasn't to shabby either.

I had a fairly up and down day a couple too many doubles but still solid enough mid 30's points. A few unlucky lip outs and an unfortunate scenario on the 2nd cost me from contending, on the 2nd hit a good drive right down the middle and landed a ball deep divot that had grown back with grass I could only try and chop it and it rolled off the back by about 6 inches and land in a rock solid are of muck with grass in front and behind couldn't hit a wedge without using it like a shovel only option was to strike down on top of the ball with the putter that rolled into a bit of rough around the bunker and dropped an inch below the top of the grass afterwards a club person said that the area should've being GUR . The course I thought was a little weird. Some spectacular holes but then you have a sheep baaaaing or singing while your putting or taking an approach shot. Some of those hills were just plain unnecessary 😂😂.

Can't wait for the next one in fermoy the course looks like a cracker.
