I got my machine upgraded to Windows 10 (from Windows 7Pro if I remember right.)

It looks like the DVD drive in it has not survived the upgrade.

    Can anything be done now?

I did look for a driver on the HP site but it doesn't show one for Windows 10.

    Just hard cheese ?

(I do also have the Windows 7 hard drive still -disconnected)

It doesn't read discs or it isn't detected at all?

    Cheers.

Not detected.I cant see it listed as a drive on the PC.

I can see the C drive and the USB drive. That is all.

I tried looking in Device Manager.Nothing there and I tried adding a new device in it. No good.

When I try to load/eject a dvd manually the button underneath doesn't bring out the tray (although I did somehow get that to happen but I can't repeat it -there is cd inside)

If it's not ejecting then it sounds like it did die. Does it show in the BIOS at all?

One small thing I may have overlooked. If you've swapped the hard drives, did you double check the power and SATA connector to it? They could be loose, they're not the most resilient of things.

If it's not ejecting the tray then it's not getting power. You are on the right path @Spear

Strangely I did succeed once only in getting the tray to eject manually.

I tried pushing the button (and the connected latch) to no effect and the opening the "door" with my fingers and pushing on the tray.

I don't know quite what it was I was doing when the tray came out .

I took out the cd in and replaced it with another .

But I have not been able to repeat that process and am more or less back to square one(the pc still does not recognize the dvd drive)

Does the fact that it did eject once (I didn't pull it out ;it came on its own, whatever I was doing) indicate that the power supply is actually in order?

Btw it wasn't me who fitted the new hard drive (with windows 10 on it presumably) but it was the local computer repair man

I think it was fairly tricky as the old drive was badly damaged and he salvaged as much as he could (lost my old address book but have coped)

I have not looked in the bios yet as I will have to investigate that procedure as I am unfamiliar with it.

I did a Belarc run through because it would normally be listed there but it is not included in the drives .

The power connector could also be loose, hence why it worked once.

It's a safe thing to open it and have a look and make sure the cables are firmly seated. There's no locks or retaining clips on the power cable, they just friction fit over a plastic tab, so it doesn't take much to pull them out.
