Scammed on Facebook Marketplace – iPhone 14 Purchase Gone Wrong

    Hi all,

Just a heads-up — I got scammed on Facebook Marketplace trying to buy an iPhone 14. Seller claimed it was a sealed, unwanted upgrade for €500. We agreed to meet, but they asked for a €200 deposit via Revolut to "hold" it. I sent it... and they vanished. Deleted the listing, unmatched me, and profile is gone.

Reported to Facebook and Revolut, but no progress so far. Gutted, and mostly just want to warn others — never send a deposit unless you’re 100% sure.

Anyone here manage to recover money from a similar situation? Worth reporting to Gardaí?

    Appreciate any advice.

Thanks, appreciate the support. Yeah, I’m going to report it to Gardaí just in case — not expecting much, but like you said, you never know. Lesson learned the hard way.

Why would you send €200 to an individual you don't know? Sorry you got scammed but you were naive and this is what scammers rely on.

Ah, you’re dead right—I know it was daft, and I’ve been kicking myself ever since. At the time, it all seemed above board, and I suppose I just wanted to believe the best in people. Lesson well and truly learned though. Thanks for the straight talk—I’ll not be so quick to trust again!

Don't understand why people will use FB Marketplace for anything, given that you've no way of seeing the seller's reputation.

Revolut won't be any help either as they query whether you are sure you want to send money to the person and you have to confirm

Absolutely right — in hindsight, it was a poor decision, and I’ve learned my lesson the hard way. I definitely won’t be so quick to trust sellers without a verified reputation in the future.

Fair play, looks like Revolut gives a proper heads-up before you send. Handy to know cheers! Fair play, looks like Revolut gives a proper heads-up before you send. Handy to know cheers

Another one to watch for when selling items is buyers turning up to buy the item and saying they will pay via bank transfer, they take your bank details and then show you on their phone the transfer from their account. You don't see the funds move to your account as they are using a fake bank app, they will demand you give them the item and that the funds will transfer soon…give these chancers a swift kick up the hole 😁.

Fair play for the heads-up—always wise to keep an eye out for those dodgy feckers!
