What's the tastiest meat you can buy?

For a reasonable price? I've started the carnivore and keto diet and decided to buy fatty meats. I bought a ribeye that was delicious but there's no way I can afford it at €10 per steak.

Have you tried trotters, bacon ribs, liver, kidney, ox-heart, oxtail, breast of lamb? All fabulously flavoursome in different ways.

Haven't bought it in years, but Fallon and Byrne used to stock venison (loin, IIRC) seasonally; looks like beef fillet steak but much tastier and half the price.

Beef brisket is hard to beat for value and cooked properly is delicious.

Beef shin slow cooked in a stew.....

Chicken thighs, marinate them and bake in the oven, quite fatty and the crispy skin is gorgeous. Get at least two different marinades, one teryiaki type and one Greek or Mediterranean. really quick and easy way to keep meat for your diet.

Non glamorous cuts, many already mentioned. Beef shin, cheeks, stewing beef, flank, skirt, bavette. Even Angus round roast from Lidl is lovely. Pork shoulder "Boston Butt".

Stewing beef, shin and cheeks are unreal when slow cooked. Add fried lardons or streaky bacon 🥓 for fat content to any lean meat.

Rainbow trout. Let's not forget fish!

If you’re on a budget, Sausages are great value and the meat percentage is not too bad these days. Aldi sausages have 70% meat content.

I am trying the carnivore diet again, last time developed histamine problems so i am going the fish and chicken route with a small bit of lamb, trout in Aldi is nice and free range chicken thighs in Tesco is not to expensive, get the ones with the skin and bone intact. Both farmed but it will do for now, The high fat % minced lamb or beef can be made into patties and if your doing dairy their own brand cheese is not to expensive.

For value, you can't beat supermarket roast chickens. Dirt cheap.
For fish go frozen or if you're in Dublin do the West pier in Howth (not at the weekend) and buy the deals. Buy whole fish and gut them yourself.
Forget about lamb unless you can source hogget or mutton which are available on Moore st. in Dublin or some Halal butchers.
For beef go onglet (hanger) steak or skirt. Available in Dublin city butchers over the counter.

    Cow tongue.

Great in a sambo with some strong mustard.

    Sorry, double post

Honestly, it's down to personal taste. Some people swear by pork belly. Others say a Rib eye. I wouldn't eat either but live the taste of a decent sirloin. I'm equally partial to my local butcher's sausages. Some rave about Lamb while others wouldn't eat it at all.

Minced round steak has 101 uses, with something to suit everyone.

Duck, especially the leg when it's been cooked confit, has to be the tastiest meat I've ever savoured.

Troys on Moore street always have skirt and sometimes hanger.

If you are a real carnivore there has to be bone in their.

Get large beef bones roast in oven for 20 mins or so. Scoop out the marrow and add to your salad or whatever.

It's really good on nice chips or sourdough but carbs are evil right 😀.

I regularly cook brisket on the BBQ, but it's fairly time consuming. Get you butcher to mince some brisket and have the nicest burgers/meatballs. The mince is more white than red

you could go the whole hog (boom boom) and do something like buy a half lamb or lamb, or similar? you'll get lots of different cuts to experiment with. you'd need a decent amount of freezer space though.

e.g. we bought from this place years ago, cannot complain!

A very decent cut but can be tough as leather if not cooked right.

Is beef brisket the same as stewing beef from the supermarket?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,250 ✭✭✭✭Jim_Hodge

Stewing is usually Round Steak. It from the opposite end of the animal to brisket.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 12,544 Mod ✭✭✭✭igCorcaigh

Oh. So that type of beef that goes into casseroles and stews and needs long cooking… isn't brisket?

I'm so confused by meat cuts. The American terminology on some websites doesn't help!

For stewing / casseroles I find beef shin or beef rib steak (aka beef chuck) to have more flavour than round steak. Round steak is leaner but is the one you get pre packed in supermarkets so easier to pick up.

Brisket is from the front lower chest, stewing is usually from the round or back end,
