Supplementary Welfare Allowance

hi guys,

a neighbour of ours is struggling to find info and get a clear answer so hoping someone here might have some info.

They are on disability allowance which is currently under review and due to missing deadline on returning documents the payment is temporarily suspended so no payment being made since last week.

They work part time but are currently signed off for at least the next 4 weeks- they cannot claim Illness benefit because of the DA.

they applied for SWA on Tuesday morning by way of returning the application to local Intreo office. They were advised yesterday by central processing the application still isn’t received to their office for processing.

What they are wondering now is would it be faster to just apply online immediately or just wait for the application dropped in the other day to be sorted? They’ve just no income whatsoever as of this week and are really worried about the next few weeks if this takes ages.

Anyone any experience or advice? Not sure what to advise myself but I think applying online now is going to cause problems?

Unfortunately applying via Post can take weeks but in some respects online applications can also take time.

It won't cause any issues if they apply online & assuming they have a my welfare account set up.

If they have, they will see if the original application was received, if it has no need to start again, if Not get them to go ahead. They should have documents ready to upload as its a Means Tested payment, bank statements etc.

Good luck to them & with the DA review.

Shocking they suspended the payment & they could have reminded them about documents requested.

it’s crazy. You’d think as well once they received everything they would have lifted the suspension!!

hi @Dempo1 they were given an emergency cheque by the community welfare, do you know the best way to cash it?

I'd imagine their own Bank would be the best option

Sorted- went to post office got it cashed on the spot.

Bank would take the usual clearance time (3-5 business days)

Yep An Post have an agreement with DSP that they will cash cheques with them directly. Funnily enough, I was on an internal team a year or so ago working on a project to eradicate cheque payments almost entirely and SWA was the most difficult sector to deal with - there were a couple of options proposed to senior management for approval but we haven't gotten any update since.
