Hi all, just a question that's been on my mind for a while as I'm going through the application process:

If I get in and pass through the college, and am chosen to move to the complete opposite end of the country, what options do I have?

Do I need to rent, or is shared accommodation available?

I see online St. Raphael's is no longer accepting mortgage requests, so just looking at all my options.

I think official accommodation is a thing of the past - if it still exists, it's very rare.

You'll be renting on the open market.

FWIW I think shafting people to the other end of the country is a thing of the past

    It does happen.

Majority are sent to the big cities (mostly Dublin) - so if you're from somewhere other than those there's a risk of being sent far from home.

Maybe not the other end of the country, but beyond commuting distance.

When you know what station you are being sent to you call the station and ask if any of the members there might have a room to rent. If you rent like that, the garda will understand you predicament and would likely be understanding if you were just renting from them while you find your feet. Another option is you find the other probationers who are going to the same garda station as you or stations near it, and ye rent a house together. Again, just ring the station and ask if anyone there knows of a house to rent. Also the Divisional training staff from around the country will come to Templemore around the time you get your station and will be able to offer advice and help with it. Best of luck with your journey.
