Any entitlements In The Civil Service when me or mr daughter are ill?

Hello, I took a career change from I.T to a clerical officer, mainly for work life balance, and am really enjoying it so far. We have a young daughter who we took to nursery this summer and unfortunately, she has been sick quite a lot, which is quite common in the first year I hear.

I have just been taking annual leave when I can’t get any cover to look after her. I did ask a few colleagues and they said in this situation they either use sick leave or annual leave. I emailed hr asking if there are any entitlements in this situation, but they did not get back to me.

Just wondering what other people in the civil service with kids do when they are on a similar situation? Would force majeure leave come under this? And if so, how do I get that applied? Any other possible entitlements?

    Thanks!

Force majeure can only be used for sudden unexpected illnesses and there are only a few days allowed anyway. Google the leave circular and that will cover all the types of leave available.

Isn't it great in the public service ye have all these entitlements for doing SFA.

In the real world the parent has to take unpaid leave. As it is 5 days sick leave in the private sector we have to produce a sick cert to Head Office or we won't receive it which costs anything up to 25euro for the cert and the daily wage is only paid @70% so not worthwhile.

You say you emailed HR to see if there were any entitlements in this situation like wtf no wonder they didn't reply, if your child is not seriously ill and has a snotty nose send them into creche

Vomiting bug, colds and flu keep them at home.

It's against forum rules to give medical advice not least when no information was given to base that on.

Many private sector jobs have as good if not better terms and conditions and pay than the public service. If someone is not happy with their private sector job maybe they need to get a better one.

You never know when you need sick leave or force majeure. Shouldn't use it except for it's intended use.

Can you not just use AL. Do you have any friends and family that can help.

It’s possible to take unpaid leave at short notice in my place for care of a family member. Otherwise it’s annual leave or muddle through.

Wow. I work in the public service and have to give in a sick cert after 24 hours. After 3 days we have to get a cert for the social welfare sick pay. And yes we pay a doctor for a cert same as the rest of the country.

Seems your real world is better after all.…

You're probably entitled to Parental Leave - check that out.

And BTW Madd002, civil servants do not do SFA.

Always have a bit of flexi leave built up for when you need a day off.
