There's some breaking news concerning Sweden. Unfortunately it looks pretty serious with an automatic weapon being used. Four people shot.

Mod: No speculation permitted as always, allow the facts to be reported.

Police in Örebro have said “about 10 people” have been killed in the shooting.

Weird phrase, maybe something is lost in translation.

Either way extremely high amount of casualties.

The shooting seems to have been at an adult education centre. Reports are 10 dead, including the gunman and that gunman held a licensed firearm.

Sweden has gone from the lowest to the second highest gun crime rate in Europe in the space of 30 years.

    Go figure.

    10 people shot dead today.

    Could the same happen here

We seem to have a lenient justice system in this country, surely that a big problem.

Roberto Eid Forest, the district chief of police in Örebro confirmed that around 10 people were killed in the attack and that he couldn’t yet be more exact because “the extent of the incident is so large”.

He added that officers were still in the process of identifying the dead.

Police said earlier that none of the people hospitalised in the attack were children, although at that stage the total number of people injured was lower than it is now.

The attack occurred at an adult education centre.

Forest said the man believed to have carried out the attack is among the dead and wasn’t previously known to police, according to local media.

He also said there was currently no known connection to terrorism.

We live in very scary times, every day it seems, either gun crime or knife crime, both on the rise

Mod: Can we please stop the speculation about the incident until the facts are reported. Warnings will have to follow unless this can be adhered to, similar to any major incident that is reported.

    Why is that one wonders

why don't you just say that's because of immigrants? anyway who knows with this case, places like sweden and finland have high gun ownership, sweden is 10th in the world, so don't celebrate yet, it may not have been a muslim

you bang on constantly about immigrants and are pro-israel, of course you're going to be praying it was a muslim that did this, so why not just come out and say it?

@j62 and @Thelonious Monk give it a rest, this is exactly why the mod warning was posted. Until there are facts reported this sort of speculation results in pointless and ridiculous arguments

In the UK if you speculate on the Shooter at all, two tier Keir will sent you to a special night court sitting, set up just for you.

I'm not sure if it is the same in Sweden. Maybe this will be a sharp test for "Coulter’s Law" ..

They also confirmed there did not appear to be a "terror" motive behind the attack.

PM suggested it was a lone wolf.

Reports of the person being a licensed gun holder.

I don't think there will be anything unique about this sorry story.

Apart from it being the first school shooting in Sweden in 64 years?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 41,829 ✭✭✭✭Boggles

To clarify nothing unique about the person who did it.

Some details on the gunman and photo in the story.

The gunman behind Sweden’s worst-ever shooting has been named by Swedish media as 35-year-old Rickard Andersson.

After massacring 10 people at Risbergska School in Orebro, police believe the attacker turned the gun on himself.

Andersson was described by relatives as a “loner” who “doesn't seem to like people”, Swedish outlet Aftonbladet reported. He suffered with mental health problems, had a licence for multiple hunting rifles, and had repeatedly been refused military service, the outlet added.

Isn't it interesting to see that this thread has died on its arse? Not one post other than Boggles in the 2 days since the perpetrator was positively identified. Once the early speculation about the religion & ethnicity of the shooter was overtaken by facts such as their name and a photograph or 2?

It demonstrates quite well how some are primed to jump to outrage on a hair trigger when they believe that they can fit that outrage to their worldview. Yet, when facts show the crime doesn't fit a preferred narrative?

The crime and it's victims seem quickly forgotten.

This story also died a death in media. Even by likes of BBC. Was strange..

Rip to victims. Sweden had problems all round.

    EVENFLOW

Among the dead are Syrians and Bosnians, according to residents and the embassies of those countries, but the police in Orebro have not given any details of the victims publicly.

It is still being covered but less

Yep, the silence tells its own story.

Just shows the usual mob don’t actually care about the victims of these terrible crimes.

The initial foaming of the mouth rage and finger pointing across social media was so pathetically predictable but they soon scurried back into their holes when they quickly realised they couldn’t openly express their shared hatred.

The media are partly complicit too.

I'm based over here in Scandinavia, and with this event I'm remembering back to the Breivik attacks. When those happened, there was a brief concern of possible reprisals against certain ethnicities under the very early assumption that it was some kind Islamic terrorist attack.

Soon enough however, and much like in this case, it was uncovered to be the work of an unhinged ethnically local person. Thereafter, the more difficult question came out; "Why is this person, who doesn't fit any of the steriotypes usually given to a Terrorist, going about blowing up chunks of Oslo and moving down dozens of kids who's only "crime" was attending the Labour Party's summer camp?"

Therein is where I think the silence on this case comes from. Much to the shame of humanity as a race, we are very quick to point a finger at someone who is other than ourselves, and move at a glacial pace when it comes to turning that finger back on ourselves.

The shooter was an unhinged Swede, the victims were numorious and diverse. No immigrants to point at and scream about this time, and with that goes the energy to engage I guess.

Whenever there's a mass shooting by a loner it's always caused by some kind of hatred. Could be a student who hates his fellow classmates. Could be a guy who hates women. Could be a guy who hates non Muslims. Could be a guy who hates muslims. It's always some guy who hates <Insert here> group of people.

And whenever it occurs, there's always people at the beginning who seem more interested in hoping that it fits into their narrative.

I saw it yesterday afternoon in the guardian. It was near the top yesterday but I haven't seen anything on it today.

I checked the BBC and this is on the front page of the site near the top. Would have been published shortly after your message. https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c5yer500qw3o

But I'd imagine normally there will only be headlines when there's something to update.
