Question re probable storm damage to domestic cordless phone

I have reason to believe something in our Panasonic set got fried; is it more likely to be something in the base unit, or in one or both handsets? (I've gathered so far that the cradles for the handsets don't get damaged by surges).

To the Mods; I'm abandoning this topic and starting again. Tried to add more detail in a second posting, but got a yellow 'illegal extension' popup, despite finding nothing that looked like a link. Then realised that the title suggested a (very vexatius!) example of someone requesting legal advice (and in the wrong forum, too!
