Fair point :) . It's just for a family meal thankfully. My kids and husband are allergic to clothes shopping so I gave it up

My brother (in riverwood in D15) said the power came back on for a while, but didn't seem like it was at full voltage. Gone again now.

Surprised so much rain fell here near Tralee, didn't expect so much, well over an inch Id say with water standing all over the garden and the drain in full flow. The fields are showing waterlogged patches the last coupe of days, topped up a fair bit overnight I would imagine. Still getting showers and breezy to windy but not too bad in my locality.

A few sparks off the SW earlier could see more nearer the coasts later and overnight , possibly a few inland in the South all associated with the unstable airmass as rain bands and troughs radiate out from the storm .

Very low pressure readings here at 962hPa Falling Rapidly set to fall lower to around 958hPa or so.

Rotten weather for the crews restoring powerlines and cutting trees not to mind those still without power or doing clear ups.

GFS was bang on. Was forecasting 107kmh gusts for me at (12). We got 106kmh and you obviously got the right gust!

Two roads blocked with big trees today within 2 miles of me, they were more vulnerable to today's East wind, south Kildare

thunder and lightning in west Cork. Lights flickered but OK so far.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 506 ✭✭✭DayInTheBog

Im in north Kerry and just not feeling this at all.

It's been a very wet day but that's about it. Hopefully that won't change overnight

was there lightning ? I saw a flash of light with the blinds closed. Didn’t hear thunder though.

An absolutely vicious cell just passed over East Cork, not seen rain that heavy many times before. A few very loud peels of thunder and some lightning.

same experience east cork, hail as well. Power went momentarily during it, met.ie shows lightening strikes near Midleton

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,381 ✭✭✭BrentMused

Really strong gusts and hail over the last 30 minutes here in the SE.

Hail has stopped now but the gusts are picking up pace.

Another windy night in Arklow, gusting to 70kmh

Gusting to 55 in the last hour

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,381 ✭✭✭BrentMused

Feels as bad as Eowyn at times here in the SE.

Lots of timber fencing etc that has taken a serious battering with the amount of storms in recent weeks/months that is barely hanging on and looking like Herminia may be the final straw, including my own!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,856 ✭✭✭yagan

Kinda average storm for Cork harbour, but no doubt it will have further weakened any damage from Friday night.

Its just been a long strewn out blustery system compared to the steam train that was eowyn.

Any idea when this storm is due to abate? Flying back from Lanzarote to Dublin this afternoon. Ryanair have advised of possible disruption, but haven't given any details yet.

    Thanks folks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,856 ✭✭✭yagan

Unless your flight is affected by backlogs there doesn't seem to be any weather issue at Dublin later. This system is weakening now.

    gusting 60kmh in Arklow again

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,918 ✭✭✭crusd

The media coverage of "Storm" Herminia was irresponsible in some cases. This was not a storm for Ireland, it was a typical winter weather system resulting in some yellow level gusts for some. The level of fear it engendered some older folks and children frightened after Thursday night was palpable. There was a genuine fear created among some that Friday morning was going to be repeated.

Met Eireann did not do this and produced an accurate and appropriate forecast for inclement weather with the extra caveat that extra caution should be taken in places with damage from Eowyn. But a lot of media amplified "Storm" angle, including RTE, which was irresponsible in the extreme.

60kmh sustained winds do not even qualify as a gale, never mind gusts. The forecast, and based on your report, accurate forecast for Arklow has nothing more than a strong breeze.

    I cant keep up

So yesterdays Wintery weather ( rain, cold and wind ) was a storm??
Or is there one coming ???

It was only a storm for Ireland in the heads of headline makers. There was no storm in Ireland Sunday / Monday morning

Id call it more a rain system than wind, and very typical for this time of year.

flooding on the coast road at Arklow’s South Beach due mainly to wave over topping today and last night

    Still gusting near 60kmph here

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 18,702 Mod ✭✭✭✭DOCARCH

Noted this morning in Greystones, despite being just past neap (lower) tides, the sea level was unusally high, and beaches near fully awash. Must be combination of very low pressure and some element of storm surge (sea being held/pushed up the Irish Sea)?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,577 ✭✭✭pureza

    yes I think so

The low pressure system is wide and flabby

If it was a smaller size but 950,we’d have chaos in Munster and South Leinster

Wind is howling here all day

Nothing dramatic but frequent 50kmh gusts and frequent fast moving showers

    A nasty day

Avoca river has burst its banks in Arklow at South quay

Flooding also at the Knockmore roundabout

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 18,702 Mod ✭✭✭✭DOCARCH

Air pressure here (in Greystones) is approx. 963mb atm, so, 50mb below 'standard' air pressue (1013mb).

For every 10mb drop in air pressure, sea level rises 10cm, so at the moment, 50cm extra 'height' to sea/tide levels, and probably more than that at the moment, due to southetly winds backing up water in the Irish Sea.

Lucky not spring tides atm, otherwise we would be hearing a lot more about coastal flooding!

Still howling away out there in the SE and has been since about 1am.

It has certainly eased but still very noticeable.

Roll on tomorrow and a bit of respite from this system. I think the whole country could do with it at this point.
