Just setting up a new thread for Storm Herminia (named by the Spanish Met Office) for today and tommorrow's wind/rain (and to keep Storm Éowyn thread just to for Storm Éowyn related posts).

For those right on the coast of Wicklow, Wexford and Waterford, potentially more/stronger wind today, from Herminia, than from Éowyn.

were there two other storms in between Eowyn and Herminia that were not reported ie those beginning with F and G….?

In fact the met Eireann web site where all the storms for 2024/25 are listed has Hugo for H refer to list below…

so why go with a Spanish named storm…..?

one other suggestion, can posters use Km/hr rather than knots when reporting wind speeds/gusts……🤔…..knot all of us are maritime folk….?

No. A bit confusing for people alright!

Storm Herminia has been named by the Spanish met office.

Our storm names are named by the Irish, UK and Dutch met offices, none of which deemed this 'event' to be a named storm (as does not meet criteria, and, in any case, the Spanish named it).

so why go with a Spanish named storm…..?

Once it has been named, by somebody, it's named and they don't rename it! 🤪

Carrigaline, Co. Cork. Wheelie bins back in steel shed, esp recycling which is full.

Bit of older wooden fence already blown into neighbours garden.

Winds are well picking up, we would be 15 mins away from weavers pt which is opposite roches pt.

seriously noisy storm here in Cork so far. Will be interested to see what our top gust turns out to be. Likely to be within 20km ph of what we got on the South coast from the storm on Friday

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,306 ✭✭✭Sammy2012

HAve to drive from north wexford to waterford later. Not looking forward to it at all. Just a regular wet and windy day so far. A day for the fire.

Easterly winds with this one veering South Easterly later. Not a terribly uncommon wind direction but not exactly a direction we get strong winds from regularly, so any weakened trees or structures may be at slightly higher risk. Winds in Wicklow look to be peaking around midday.

Nothing too exciting in 0900 reports. Roches Point gusting 49knots/91kmh.

    Gusting 41knots/76kmh now in Greystones.

Looks like the the worst of Herminia wont be until later this evening/ tomorrow. Has it even really hit us yet, probably not?

yeah, easterly winds always seem louder for some reason. They make my front door rattle for a start. Aspect I suppose

At the moment it's just one of the most miserable days you can imagine here in Wicklow. Gusty but not much and good intervals between the strongest ones. The rain is horrible though wouldn't put the cats out in it. A day for a book in front of the wood stove.

absolutely nasty day here in south carlow. Drove to Kilkenny at 7:30 and it was fine on the way in but nasty on way home and saw some trees and branches down.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 294 ✭✭pauly58

Horrible here in West Cork, lashing rain & winds that seem worse than Friday. Power went out just after nine I wondered if we were going to be out for the long haul, luckily came back just after ten. My sympathies go out to those without power & perhaps worse, no water.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,525 ✭✭✭esposito

Absolutely rotten morning in South Dublin with rain lashing down and south east winds.

The sooner high pressure comes the better.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 287 ✭✭newirishman

Similar rotten in St Anne’s Park / Raheny. Good luck to all the runners for the 5m race later today here!
I hope things calm down a bit by then.

    Power gone

We survived Eowyn, but not Herminia

I'd say the high winds are after moving wires or trees

    North Westmeath

Recent gust of 55knots/102kmh at DunLaoghaire Harbour.

    Gusting 47knots/87kmh in Greystones.

Seems like a normally windy day at the moment.

Hopefullly we dont get the brunt of it. Still no power since Friday.

    South Roscommon

Not untypical storm winds around Cork harbour, but tomorrows early morning winds could cause a bit of disruption.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,093 ✭✭✭✭Spanish Eyes

Eowyn for the most part was wind, and it was destructive and worrying at times. Today, with no time to draw a breath it's just miserable out there. I went out the back to throw out some leftover bits for the birds and nearly got knocked out by a massive gust all of a sudden and driving rain to add to the mix. I'm not opening a window or a door today and settling in for a massive lazy day. South Dublin.

Couple of big power outages in Dublin 15 - over 5k affected.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,690 ✭✭✭✭briany

South to south-easterly, so obviously we'll be feeling this one more pointedly on the east coast.

Wind ramped up further in last 10 minutes in Greystones. Gusting 53knots/98kmh at the moment. Not far off Éowyn here now.

Yep it’s absolutely horrendous. One of the worst days I’ve experienced in recent times. A total write off for most of the east coast.

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 18,702 Mod ✭✭✭✭DOCARCH

Gusting 57knots/106kmh now in Greystones equalling high gust for Éowyn (here).

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,126 ✭✭✭Notmything

Saw something similar on a Facebook page, asked "where" and the reply was "my gaff".

Clearly the storm had knocked the power out in their brain cells.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 798 ✭✭✭Snowbiee21

Power out in my local of D13

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 4,498 Mod ✭✭✭✭mickger844posts

Max gust of 80km/h earlier at my Waterford station which is on a par with the 80km/h during Éowyn. I’m wide open to a South Easterly here so always record high from that direction.

I’d still say Eowyn was worse over all here . Today is more like a typical wet and windy day.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,110 ✭✭✭adocholiday

The wind just completely died off here in Rathdrum, Wicklow in the past 15 minutes. Still raining but brightening up a bit too. Hopefully that's the worst of it done here for a while at least.

Best news I've had so far today! I'm on my way to D4 to play a tennis match at 2 🙈 - praying it eases off a bit by then.... our men have been playing since 11, God help them!

Local roads flooded with water pumping out of the drains in D6w.

4kwp South East facing PV System. 5.3kwh Weco battery. South Dublin City.

Got out with dog before the weather showed up this morning

Beautiful pink and purple sky to east when I walked out the door and within minutes it was grey and the wind was picking up, that was about 8am, sea was rough but not terribly so, I'd say the forty foot would still have swimmers at that stage

Wind howling down chimney now and rain battering the windows, duvet afternoon I'd say

    South Dublin on coast

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,422 ✭✭✭ongarite

More trees down today in my locality of Meath, D15. All probably weakened by Friday's storm. Power was out in D15 earlier in Mulhuddart area.

  • Moderators, Science, Health & Environment Moderators Posts: 17,311 Mod ✭✭✭✭Gonzo

very windy and wet here in Meath but thankfully the power is still holding. I'm absolutely sick of the cold rain and wind at this stage.

Seems to be calming down now in Greystones.

Unusually strong easterly wind here in Castlebar. Cannot be helping the repair crews at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,298 ✭✭✭circadian

I think the power is gone in D9. Not at home at the minute but no access to the home network.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 798 ✭✭✭Snowbiee21

power gone in d17 over an hour close to santry.

My sister's trampoline made it through Eowyn but pitched itself over an hour ago in ongar.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,394 ✭✭✭mojesius

Power gone in south wicklow. Heading out to Dundrum thankfully

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,664 ✭✭✭JJayoo

    South Sligo

Nasty rainy/windy day, wind definitely coming from a different direction to Eowyn, our power was meant to be back this evening but this wind will hold back progress.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 171 ✭✭Lip Out

Think I'd sooner sit in a cold, dark house 😀
