I have looked online on this and still unsure on the answer. I have 2 school going kids, one 5 and one 8, and want to bring them to dentist? Can they get a free dental appointment? See below, reference to certain classes etc. Does anyone know what classes qualify? Also I am curious what screening appointment in school involves

Dental services for children are provided by dentists in local HSE dental clinics. This service is accessed through screening appointments in your child's primary school.

    Routine dental treatment

All children in certain classes in primary school and children with special needs are offered an appointment for a free dental exam. A follow up appointment will be made with your local HSE Dental Clinic if needed

It can definitely be a bit confusing! From what you shared, it sounds like kids in certain primary school classes (usually around 2nd, 4th, and 6th class, depending on your area) are offered free dental screening through the HSE. If anything is found during the screening, they’ll refer you to your local HSE dental clinic for follow-up — also free.

Since your kids are 5 and 8, your 8-year-old might be close to the age where they get called for a screening (maybe 2nd class). It’s probably a good idea to check with your school or local HSE dental clinic to see when they’re scheduled for your school.

The school screening is usually just a quick check to spot any obvious issues — it’s not a full clean or full treatment.

    Hope that helps a bit!
