BIC Pens - a clicky failure?

I've faced multiple scenarios where I've realised, when at class some teachers say that is annoying when the pens click, and at the end of the day, it kinda is. One teacher even tried to ban the pens completely. Why wouldn't BIC design a pen that has no sound at all?

I'm almost certain BIC don't make clicking pens. All have removable caps instead.

edit: forgot the 4 colour one. Anyway, you can't just design away mechanical noise.

I prefer the gel filled pens. Although since college I use pencils for nearly everything. I did maths in college and after the first year you realise how messy your maths looks when you're making loads of little mistakes and you have to cross it out. Now I have a little collection of mechanical pencils.

Although on the op's topic. I definitely would have been one of those people clicking pens. I fidget a lot so it's just natural.

Anyway, you can't just design away mechanical noise.

The pencil I use for woodworking has a "lead" that extends and retracts as required. It makes no detectable noise (except in causing me to curse when it inexplicably disappears right before I need it, but that's a different story … )

(unreliably) holding on to a soft material like graphite doesn't make much noise at all to begin with; spring loaded impacts of hard plastic in to hard plastic on the other hand make quite a bit.

Reminds me of the movie, Garden State, where Zach Braff's character's high school friend now lives in a big mansion because he sold a patent for silent velcro. Invent a silent click pen and you could be a millionaire.

There is a type of retractable pen that relies on rotating the top part relative to the bottom to silently extend or retract the nib but you need both hands to operate it and it's slower. Cross ballpoint pens (had a factory in Co. Galway) were like this.

I'd recommend the Fulgor Nocturnus by Tibaldi, which sold for $8 million at auction.
Guaranteed to 'click' with that in your top pocket.

Computer mouses (mice?) are just as bad, especially when listening to current affairs programmes on the radio.

It actually took me ages to realise that the Morning Ireland presenters weren't just fiddling around with their pens while their guests were talking on the phone 😳.
