Wind or Solar or Both

    Hi All,

I'm currently considering solar for the house but it was put into my head the idea of wind power. After a bit of thought I think it's a definite possibility which may prove more beneficial but I've very limited knowledge on turbines.

I'm based near Enniscrone, Sligo and can see a number of wind farms from the house so not concerned about the wind speed side of it. More wanting to know what size turbine I'd need to cover 5000kwh usage a year as well as any other regulations or pitfalls to avoid.

I've just under 2acres of land that could hold a reasonable installation.

With the ESB limits on microgeneration I'm concerned if I do go ahead with wind I might go over and end up paying for it.

    Thanks.

There been lots of chat here over the years on wind, consensus is go 100% solar, wind just not worth it

I looked into getting a wind turbine some time ago, but the cost was just too prohibitive compared to pv solar systems. Not only the cost of installation, but the ongoing maintenance costs will eat into your generating 'profits'.

Recently, I was re-looking at turbines and the company that used to import Proven turbines had given up importing them because they were just not cost effective.

From the TurboTricity website (the importers of Proven turbines):

Turbotricity is no longer producing wind turbines for end users.
Our turbine would cost €13,500 installed and produce at most 5,000 units of power per year on many sites. Our closure was triggered by a number of issues, but mainly that solar photovoltaic panels fell in price by some 85% for installed systems in the last eight years.

    Food for thought

    Dave

You'd get more benefit from the heat of your fart than the wind on a domestic installation according to the research I've done. Product cost. Install cost. Maintenance cost. Poor generation in the majority of installations. Stick with solar.
