    Hi Anthony,

We have been making charcoal here in Tang for many years, initially small scale for metalworking, for a number of years commercially for an Irish charcoal company, nowadays back to smallish scale for metalworking. (we smelt iron from bog ore and do some blacksmithing). For a number of years we made all the charcoal for the International Furnace festivals in Woodford and Caherconnell.

I have a couple of designs for charcoal retorts and kilns and a worn out exeter charcoal retort (this requires heavy work to repair and is for sale for scrap value to any interested parties).

I'd be happy to help you out getting started making charcoal. The kind of kiln you need will depend on your use case, different kilns and retorts make charcoal of various different qualities, largely dependent on the temperature reached.

Give me a pm and I'll share my phone number and email.

    Tim
