Has anyone registered as an employer and can tell me how much pain is it?

Hi all, I have so far failed to secure an after school spot for my toddler for next year so I'm considering my options. One would be to hire a childminder (assuming I can find one I trust, can afford, is willing and all that). I am not keen on doing things off the record, but I am a bit intimidated by the expenses and overhead of becoming an employer. Has anyone an input on how much pain it is to pay taxes each month (PRSI and your employee paye and usc), plus registering etc? (talking about the practical side, do you send bank transfer to revenue with it all, some complicated 19 steps ritual for that's delivered by carrier pigeon, some 7 hells of revenue forms?). Expense wise I figure you would pay 8.5-10.5% PRSI on the gross plus a month of holidays, right?
