Never mind a Rolex, I don't think I would have any car left, maybe not even the house, if I had your kids 😂

My lad is after being tapped up to work as a research assistant for his final year. It means that he'll get paid, that he can use the work he undertakes as the basis for his FYP and it'll likely get him another publication credit too.

The next "big" expense for me with him will depend on whether or not he takes up a deferred place on the Washington Leadership programme next year.

Hang in there, your job is nearly done 😁

(looks like he is doing well for himself, of course some of the credit for that goes to you)

Thank you! I say it every time someone mentions it, and not out of an effort at faux humility or just the Irish inability to take a compliment 😉

But, I've been incredibly with the people around us. When we were at a lowest they lifted us and they gave us both the foundation to let him launch himself.

I want nothing for him but happiness and considering the start he had? We are definitely doing ok on that front.

Same here! Eldest son is in 2nd year Eng, looking at Erasmus next year. Middle lad is in 5th year, and thinking about college.

I'm self employed and running out of assets! 😂

So, after much ado, I bit the bullet and bought the watch

The seller (a spanish Jewellers) has received payment, but they're now asking me for my passport or ID, is this normal?

Are they looking for my PPS number? That isn't going to be on my passport and we don't do ID cards in Ireland ..?

    "Hi 1234,

Please send to us photo of your ID/Passport. Thank you.

We need it for accounting purposes. We need to add personal id number to the invoice.

    Requirement from Spanish tax authorities.

    --

    Kind Regards,"

In Spain it's perfectly normal. High value purchases require the buyer's ID as part of Spanish AML laws.

The link below is an overview of Italy's law, Spain is similar. In mainland Europe it's quite common to be asked to provide photo ID as part and parcel of just using a credit card. It's not considered onerous as residents are required to carry ID at all times. My own experience is based on 4yrs+ living in Spain before the AML laws went into effect.

They didn't mention your PPS number. Just an ID, which is Ireland would be your passport or drivers license. Not sure why you think we had none.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,045 ✭✭✭1123heavy

Because they asked for a personal ID number which they seem to think we have on an ID card, like they do. We don't have ID cards. A drivers license and passport are forms of ID, but they are not ID cards and we don't have personal ID numbers.

They closest thing we have to a personal ID number is our personal public service number .. our pps no. - which is only found on our psc card.

I'll send them my license and see if that's enough for them. Thanks

They didn't say "ID Card". They said ID. A passport is a ID. A driver's license is also an ID too. There's the passport card too. Nothing specified it had to be a card, but FWIW 2 of those 3 recognised IDs are cards, and they specifically named the 3rd.

So passport number, license number, etc. Either would be fine. I think you are misunderstanding "personal ID number". While it could be a number assigned to you, it's also the number of your "ID". ie Your ID's number.
what ever ID you send a picture of, that's the number they'll record.

If you do any sort of trading online (crypto, stocks, etc) you often have to proove you identity using an. I've only ever used photos or numbers from passport or drivers license. And I have more than one of each. You'll be fine with either.

High end retailers in Ireland will sometimes request ID, especially if paying cash, I think they have been advised by the Gards to do so, part of anti-money laundering/CAB type stuff.

Fair enough, ID cards do have a personal ID number so when she said ID number it seemed she wants an actual ID card or passport

Anyway, they can knock themselves out with my driving license number

Meanwhile, I owe a thanks to whoever recommended to speak to the jewellers away from chrono24 .. got it for 4550 in the end as opposed to 4700 .. every little helps. I didn't approach them, just went to their website and there it was for 150 less!

That's the exact reason. Same as the crypto KYC requirements.

I think I’d give you a run for money on that..🫣

The watch has arrived :D it's a piece of art

The bracelet however is a tad too large for my wrist, meaning the watch doesn't fit as snug as it could. I've seen all manner of people on forums saying how to reduce it in size with certain tools, but I don't even want to attempt it because I haven't a clue.

Is there anywhere I can take it to, to get it reduced?

    Congratulations and pictures please!

I have all the tools for bracelet manipulation, if you are anywhere near Dublin or west of the city.

It's really not hard when you've done it a few times.

    DM if you are interested.

Is there a halflink in the bracelet?

Pictures :D .. along with a photo of the excess

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,867 ✭✭✭Lorddrakul

It looks like it does have a half link, but you could do with taking a full one out.

That bracelet is particularly easy to work on, and given its newness, it is unlikely to be heavily corroded or gummed up.

Offer stands, if you want to have a go at doing it.

Congrats on the new seamaster, that's my favourite dial variant on them.

I missed this initial thread discussion and it is quite interesting to read through. So much of what defines luxury is perception. From talking to friends who generally know absolutely nothing about watches, the watch they all want is Rolex because that is the "I made it watch" that is recognised by absolutely every one. We tend to debate merits of the quality of watches on here but there is very little difference in actual quality on any watch brand in the 5-15k bracket. They are all mid tier brands and all luxury items as far as I am concerned. This is entirely personally subjective though, for some a stainless steel Patek isn't luxury because it isn't precious metal. There is no doubting that Rolex is the higher luxury watch though (wherever your luxury scale starts) purely because of brand perception. Is a Seamaster just as good if not better than a submariner in terms of build quality? Yes, of course. Is it as luxurious an item? No, because of Rolexes brand value.

Funnily enough, despite the above, the sub is such a copied watch both in "homages" and fakes, anytime I see one I always tend to just think fake unless I know the person in question. This isn't Rolexes fault but just find it amusing as it counters the brand value mentioned above.

The average person on the street would walk at the thought of spending even a couple of thousands on a watch, it would be deemed an entirely unnecessary/waste of money .. a surplus/luxury ..

Meanwhile the night glow is pretty cool on it. Thanks to Lorddrakul who attempted to remove the link, the screws were a bit too tight so we decided to leave it .. Weirs later removed it for 15eu. Free link addition/removal for the life of the watch apparently if I show them the receipt.
