Family selection?

Does anyone know how it was decided what family got what baby in the mother and baby homes, in my case, my birth family were small farmers, not poor but not wealthy, and my adopted parents also small farmers of similar means, Richard Boyd-Barrett’s birth family were fairly affluent (I’d guess) and his adopted family would have been similar, I’m using him as an example cause he was born the same year as myself and he’s already in the public eye.

So was it random or was there a selection process which decided which babies would be compatible with their new families?

Interesting question and one I don't know the answer to.

My birth father was recorded as being a truck driver, same as my Dad, so there may be something to it.

Although it turned out the man named in that paperwork wasn't my birth father.

Richard Boyd Barrett's family were the Cusacks. So Cyril Cusack (Uncle Peter in Glenroe and the gunsmith in "The day of the Jackal") would have been his maternal grandfather. Making Daniel Day Lewis his Step father I think.

I had a girlfriend, many years ago and government policy was divided at the time. The old half wanted to bury these records citing confidentiality. The public pressure was to release the records and answer a LOT of questions. The minister of Health of the day double the civil servants to clear these records and allow people see them (before election time). Now my girlfriend at the time didnt get names but she did get a bit of social history where she was born and who lived in her house. It was very blurred. If there was a record then pursue it but you may not like what you find.

This girl has passed away since as she was a sickly person.

I think they often tried to match the babyto a similar family.

Birth mother was a dental nurse, adopted mother was a book keeper,

Father we now suspect was a Garda sergeant and my dad an accountant.
