Rugby referees expenses

For fear of being ridiculed or slated, I have never used any sort of Board and so could have this all wrong, I wanted to ask this question to all you learned people.

My daughter took up rugby at about age 13. Absolutely loved it and took to it brilliantly. Was part of squad who won first provincial title for the club in its history and was invited to trials for the provincial squad.

All going great and then she got sick. Long story, could not play again. Recently, aged 23, was talked into taking up refereeing. Is studying so is a long way away from where she is reffing. Has to travel significant distance. Is a student with no job.

she did not want to ask but after two matches found out that she does not get paid and can get travel expenses but only can claim periodically.

Is this correct? Is it fair? I just wonder, if they want people to ref and we want consistency in the application of the rules should we not compensate them for their efforts and make it worth their while doing it? Most other sports do.

Just wondering what people’s thoughts are and if it has been discussed before?

    Thanks
