Tv aerial fell down

During the storm last night, the aerial fell down. It's a big old beast and I'm looking for alternatives to replace this with a modern way of receiving rte etc.

We have 2 televisions. One would be just terrestrial and other a combination of fta satellite and terrestrial.

I was thinking of rte player casting to tv.

    Is that a good alternative?

You can get antennas which can be installed within the attic. Some of the indoor antennas won't be good enough to receive saorview unless you are close enough to an antenna. We got an antenna installed in the attic and have never has an issue in about 8 years. We also got a satelite dish which enabled us get all Freesat(uk channels)

Many of the modern smart TVs already have rte player installed. So obviously it would depend on on your internet speed and reliability. When watching sport there may be a a few secs delay compared to you neighbours so you may hear a cheer a few seconds before you see something!

My tv doesn't have the rte player unfortunately. I do have a firestick thst I use for netflix. Can the rte player be used on that?

I'd rather use an aerial though. I live in meath. Which transmitter is closest?

My aerial was facing north but a neighbour about 200metres away has there's facing south?

Depends where in Meath but it would probably be Drogheda or 3Rock.

    Try Saorview | Check Coverage

I'm in Malahide(North County Dublin) and we are too far away/obstacles to use the indoor antenna's that you can buy in the likes of Powercity/DID etc.

It says clermont carn, so it was facing the right way. But seems a fair old distance away at 52km.

Probably not but have you tried it?

RTÉ are developing a hybrid Saorview service, broadcast/broadband using a new standard called DVB-I. It allows TVs to receive Saorview via traditional aerial or via IP. But realistically that's a few years away.

Right now, what's your nearest Saorview transmitter. If it's one of the main hi-power ones you could get away with an attic aerial.

Check the Saorview coverage map to find the transmitter and distance

So even though it's showing clermont carn as the recommended transmitter, the one in drogheda is much closer.

Maybe it's my house location can not see the drogheda one.

Drogheda is much weaker, it’s only 250 watts and was only intended to serve the town. Clermont Carn is far more powerful.

I've tried rte player on my tv using firestick but it doesn't seem to work.

I'm currently using my PC and hdmi to tv. Works fine.

Reading elsewhere it seems like the rte player doesn't work well on firesticks.

I did some work on aerial too and realised the big aerial was for freeview so removed that as have freesat. Just using the small aerial for saorview. Got a good response without the original big pole

yeah, 52km for Clermont is no distance at all given how powerful it is so you should be able to get away with a relatively small aerial for it.
